My father-in-law left about 90 silver silver dollars. this is the only one that seems to be a (somewhat) key date. what is the condition? how much is it worth? how much would if fetch on ebay? the coin is much shinier, reflection off the coin throws off the auto camera exposure .
Looks like xtra fine to AU, maybe $40-70,you can search ebays past auctions to get a better idea. As far as your other coins, grade is extremely important as is year & mint. You may try to find a dealer or locate a coin show in your area & have them appraised. Good luck.
Look for any CC mint mark as they are all worth a few more $$$. From what you said here and from the photo I would guess that it has been cleaned...I see many hair lines on the face and by the face. That would lower the grade and the value. Speedy
Speedy, thanks for your reply. i really don't think its been cleaned (but i may be wrong). my father in law was not a collector, he just pulled stuff out of circulation (for most of the last century). we found most of the dollars in a plastic bag in the bottom of a tin container. could the 'hair lines' be from rubbing with other coins in the bag (or from normal handling)? hwdbob: we went to a dealer that offered the silver value on all the coins (about 45 pounds of silver alone!). A coin-collector relative went through them, bought a slew of them (at considerably more) and put some aside for us to sell on our own -- because he could not afford them. the 'red book' price on this one seemed to be considerably more than all the others.
"Normal" handling could say a lot...but what is normal?...this coin hasn't been in cirulation a lot (if my grade is right) and so it should show some nicks..digs...and rim bumps but not hair lines. The hairlines may come from someone keeping it in his pocket for a long time but I think the rest of the coin would show more wear. I don't think the hair lines would come from other coins as most of the time they leave nicks and digs and lines but not like I'm seeing in the photo....what could have happened...is that it was cleaned long before your father got it...I would grade it XF-AU...if it hasn't been cleaned... A dealer will always offer less than a collector will.... Remember---the Red Book price guide is not too good...the prices can be way off...the best thing to do is to check ebay and some online auctions to see what this coin is selling for in the same grade with the same date...1903-P--- Speedy
Just to clarify - we have an Open Forum, in which you may make one posting per week offering to buy, sell or trade coins, using PMs or emails to finalize any deals; and an Auction Forum, in which you may start one thread per week either conducting an auction, or advertising auctions you may have at other venues. Buy, sell, trade postings are not permitted in any of the other forums.
I also think the coin was cleaned - but long ago. It appears in the pics that t has retoned somewhat. I would agree with the XF/AU grade.
