Came across this item and was curious if it's legit. What's your thoughts. I read some are being made to look like Iridescent toning.
I wouldn't trust that self slabber. Even if the toning is legit it's likely either a problem coin or waaaay over graded.
From a single photo, I still can't distinguish light wear from "MS but typically poorly struck from New Orleans". I agree that this looks like second-growth toning. I thought I saw pull-away near the date and a couple of other places, but looking more closely, I don't think so. The area under the chin, around the first three stars left of the date, looks especially bad, like something puddled there.
I have a few Morgans that were left in an album for several years before I got them and NONE of them looked like this type of toning. Not sure about the toning but the GRADING is extremely suspect. I acquired a coin that had been graded by the company/individual/who/whatever and it was a 21 Peace that someone(see above list) stuck an MS 63 on and IF it graded XF that might be close. Stay safe. Toning looks fine. It is hard to tell the grade with O-mint Morgans from pictures. Really need the coin in hand but I would lean towards AU.
I noticed the tone on the chin also, on the first Morgan, seems a bit odd. All Morgan's are keepers in my opinion and these are no exception. Thanks for the post.
Ok, so dump the slab and either sit on it or have it graded? Big question......Is it worth $50 as is?
I inherited about 20 Morgans from my father. I noticed recently, that there is a hint of toning on the edges. I have placed them in some 2" x 3" slabs. Should I bet get concerned"?
