Morgan Dollars - Grade? Hello everyone, this is my first post and I apologize for not using the intro forum, but I figured I'd get right to posting. I know very little about coins, but I have been reading a lot of the posts here and I am very impressed with the knowledge that resides here at CoinTalk. I metal detect as a hobby and was steered to this forum by another member of the Friendly Metal Detecting Forum. I dug this coin out of a flower bed, it was just under the surface. My camera work isn't the greatest and my camera went dead after I took these two photos, so I will try and take some better photos if necessary. I guess my question is what grade is this coin? Oh, and I only cleaned it with soap and water.
dang, thats a nice one. Looks to be in the au range. I live about a half an hour from you, I'm in Brentwood. Welcome to the forum.
Welcome to CoinTalk, CW. That's a great coin to find metal detecting. It is unusual for a large coin like a silver dollar to be lost and not noticed. It's hard to tell from your photos but I'm guessing the coin would grade EF (aka XF) or so. I don't see any luster but that may be because the coin is washed out in the photos (a bit too much light). Congrats on a nice find.
Nice find. The coin does look to be in XF condition but the photos are not good enough for a better evaluation. And, by the way, Welcome to CoinTalk. You'll learn a lot here. Bruce
Thanks for the welcomes, after my battery charges I'll try taking some photos with a little less light. Hobo, I agree with you about large coins. The only thing I can think of is that being in the flower bed kept it out of sight.
Welcome to the forum. I agree with the EF (xf) opinions also. Of course better pics will help. It looks to have some nice feather details. That is a great find with a detector. I usually find a bunch of moderns, nothing to speak of. It's odd that this coin hasn't developed some sort of environmental damage. It must not have been there too long. Possibly a lost coin?? I've never found detector silver and wonder if they do damage in the ground after a while?
Great find I'm thinking low AU maybe even higher. It looks like a very strong strike especially for a O mint. I'm surprised the eagle's breast still has good details.
Silver can come out of the ground in good condition depending upon soil content. Here's a photo of a ring I dug last weekend that has been cleaned with water only. Here's some pics with a little less light.
I knew my mother had some old coins that were my grandfather's and I found these Morgans among them. I agree that the one I found is a little "cleaner" looking than others, but I only washed it with dish soap and water and I didn't wash the others. I took a seperate photo of the one that looks like it's in the best condition to me. I had to look up what the "O" was, is it that uncommon for coins to travel across country.
Dang! That's a nice find, great job! :thumb: I can see the detailed breast feathers on the one you found, so I would say you have a really nice find there! Once again, great job, and welcome to the forum! :hail:
If there is a difference in grade between the two Morgans I posted, I would appreciate it if someone could explain what the difference is. I don't know what I'm looking for.
Welcome County. I metal detect also just on the east coast. What did that big honker Vdi at? Nice find!
I was swinging an ACE250 at the time I found it. It was hitting solid on the dollar at 2 inches. Usually if something is hitting on the dollar it shows 8 inches deep and I know it's foil or something. It was laying flat right under the surface.
