You might consider putting those boxes in the attic over the summer time. Its something to consider in order to facilitate or accelerate a toning reaction.
I might try something slightly less drastic first. I'm trying to get honest NT coins if I can out of this experiment. I thought the wooden boxes and sulpher residue from the matchbox would do the trick, but many folks have pointed out the need for more exposure to air, humidity and temperature variation.
If the coins are put into a natural environment, there will be natural toning... if you put them into a fire or a microwave or something, that will definitely be AT. Putting them in the attic is definitely honest NT. Nothing to worry about.
AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! NO! Walkers definitely not. I'm thinking we need to put some morden hideous coins in the microwave. like the new sac or a roosevelt dime. definitely not a walker though. too beautiful.
haha yeah i know just stay away from the microwave. As has been mentioned, keep it in a relatively open environment exposed to different kinds of woods/air with fluctuating humidity... not saying you were considering using the microwave... but yeah.
I once put a state quarter in the toaster and it turned out purple, red, and yellow. It was really nice looking, but I have never been able to get the same effect on silver. The closest was when I put salt on a rosie and baked it. Came out bluish but it was pretty obvious it was at'd.
that's pretty awesome. I kinda want to AT some coins and see if people flip out when I use them as change.
Easy answer: probably, eventually complicated: It depends. I Use only fully synthetic oil in my cars with no sulfur. Before the 70s, motor oil was "crude" ( pun) with high sulfur content. Especially after use. Go 3000 miles in your Hemi, filter the old oil, and it gave colors! But totally unpredictable. Rather than use motor oil, just get some sulfur from the garden center and add a known amount to a known amount of mineral oil, transparent so you can see what is happening, and experiment with different time exposure. This will give a person a better idea of the toning/corrosion process, as well as the mistakes that can be made. Maybe some will think I am advocating AT, No, I am advocating experimentation for the purpose of educating one on the toning process. If it goes wrong, your booty. Sulfur is bad Karma hya:, misuse it and Friday the 13th will go on all year!:headbang:hya: Jim
I have to Unc common Morgans, I think I'm going to try a damp canvas bag near my radiator. God only knows what might happen though.:thumb:
Just thought a thread of this nature could use a little color. I especially love the green in the flame and the tips of the leaves, on the reverse. PS: No way...I didn't do this myself...it's 100% natural!
