The later times in the empire, particularly during the Thirty Years War were more like the Unholy Roamin Dumpfire.

During the Thirty Years War, HRE Ferdinand II was in command of the Catholic forces vs the Protestant invaders from Denmark/ Sweden. Here is my Hungarian AV Dukat 1633 K-B (Kremnitz Mint) from this Emperor. 9abd7c4941789df2c02b4a9a4f13febb.jpg

Truthfully, I really don't know much of the European history from around this time so this coin of mine has always confused me. It is said to be issued by the Kingdom of Navarre, but when I look online at the history during the coins issue it seems like it was joined with Spain by this time, but both Navarre and Spain were under the control of the Holy Roman Empire if I understand that right? This coin is from Charles the Fifth of the HRE.

Charles the 5 was Holy Roman Empire but my understanding is that it was a personal union not a state union (like George II of Britian being elector of Hanover )

I have some coins issued by HRE's from years when they did not hold the title:

Francis I, Emperor of Austria, 1807. Formerly HRE Francis II. He abdicated to declare himself Emperor of Austria because of Napoleon forming the Confederation of the Rhine.

Carlos III, pretender to the throne of Spain, later HRE Charles VI, 1711
He wanted to be King of Spain, but when his older brother died he became Archduke of Austria and King of Hungary instead. This weakened his claim to the Spanish throne because England withdrew its support, not wanting to see Spain and Austria in a personal union.

I think this was issued by HRE Charles IV of Bohemia, the first Czech Holy Roman Emperor (1346-78). It was sold misattributed as under Wencezlaus II.
obverse: "[DEI GRATIA] REX BOEMIE KAROLUS PRIMUS"
    reverse: "GROSSI PRAGENSES"
    1 Gross, 1346-78
I think he was the 1st King Karl of Bohemia (thus Karolus Primus), even though he became the 4th Holy Roman Emperor named Charles.

For comparison, here's one nominally minted under his Charles IV's (right) grandfather, King Wenceslaus II of Bohemia (left). These were issued all over central Europe for about 200 years after his rule, so I have no idea if it was actually issued under Wenceslaus II. As you can see, it has been heavily clipped. It's only 23 mm and 2.56 g. The Charles IV is 28 mm and 3.02 g.

The later Wenceslaus II copies were issued with lower weight and fineness. The older "good" coinage was probably clipped down until it had comparable silver content to current issues so that it would still circulate.
