On 2-9-2009 the USPS issued the four stamps honoring the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. They supposedly depict four aspects of his life, although they don't seem much more imaginative than the Mint's offerings. At least they got them out when promised. The BEP has it easier. Most of their products are contracted out. I don't know if that's the case here, but.... The BEP's main in-house product is currency. And my stamp collection stops about 1965-1970. The US just was putting out too much stuff.
Me too. Stamps have taken a back seat to coins, but anything I do get will be mostly in the US classics. I'll extend into the Washington-Franklins. After that I'm solid to about 1965.
If you note the time I posted you'll see why I wasn't seeing things quite right. You got it! Thanks for the correction.
That's debatable. It's really hard to keep up with all that's available. With 85 designs issued in 2008 per http://www.usps.com/communications/newsroom/2007/sr07_084.htm or 94 issues per http://www.usps.com/communications/newsroom/2008stamps/downloadcenter.htm (even the PO doesn't seem to know how many they issue) plus how many regular issues continuously available, you have to practically live in the PO to get them all. Then you have the varieties - sheets, panes, booklets, coils, etc. Add to that stamped envelopes, post cards and special use stamps. And, there are different papers, printing presses, perforations, watermarks, etc. I gave up on stamps in the 80's when it just got too complicated to buy and display everything. I do agree that it is cheaper than coins. If you were to buy one of everything available from the Post Office each year you probably wouldn't spend more that $100 per year. You sure can't say the same about coins.
I got some of these myself, to go with the dollar coins, and if I'm lucky, the special set later. Kinda hard to pass on this stuff, Abe and I share the same birthday.
If you try to get ALL that is available, that's true. I started off with a couple buffalo stamps, then discovered first day covers. If you look in my album, I have had fun finding anything to do with buffalo's in stamps and first day covers. Trying to collect everything the post office puts out would be like trying to collect every coin from every series in every condition. Madness is sure to follow. Just like coins, find something you like and specialize! Kiss
April 15th, Abe Lincoln dies, The Titanic sinks, Income tax day, Freaky Garrett is born. An I sensing a pattern of tragedies here?
