I went on the US Mint today just to take a look at the coin and ohhhh my god was it slow. I mean is everyone in America is buy this coin. Not me. I'll buy it in a few months from e-bay for about 20% less than it is listed for on e-bay.
If this coin sells out within thirty days, you may not have that option. I ordered the unc Lincoln today. It's cheaper, and I like the looks better than a proof. The mint claims this is an introductary price, so it may sell out fast.
You're right 101, the website was slow. I also ordered both the proof (2) and the uncirculated. My son's birthday is today and thought a proof would be a nice present. Still haven't turned him into a collector, but maybe in the future!
I went on at 12pm exactly and pages were slow, could not even add it into the cart. So just went back to the office, half hour later, was able to add it and pay for it. I went in for 5 of proof and 5 of unc, then when I logged in, I guess it remembered from 12 noon I added 5, so just bought 10 proofs, and 5 unc. will keep one of each, use rest for gifts. It is a goregous coin, worst case, I figure I can sell the rest for at least what I paid for them. Plan b... wait till silver hits $37/oz =)
I agree, great looking coin. And yes once it sells out at the mint the e-bay prices will go up for a little a while but they will go back down. I have no faith in any coin appreciating in value these days. Yeah maybe a MS70 George Washington on his birthday in 2109 might be worth something..lol but the days of anyone collecting coins to try to make a profit are gone in my opinion. Do it because you like to collect and you like the beauty of the coin. I will also admit the craftsmanship on modern coins are amazing!!!
First time for me to ever get anything from the Mint, but for some reason I was drawn by the Lincoln Proof... Probably for the history and nothing more...
I got one of each also but like the unc a bit better. Well from the pictures I do. Will have to see what they look like in hand.
I placed my order for two each of the proof and uncirculated Lincoln dollars about mid-afternoon. There were no delays. The whole transaction took about 2-3 minutes. My personal opinion, the coins will sellout. Five hundred thousand for a maximum mintage for America's greatest president is small.
