If you get 2 rolls it is only costing you a dollar, so you might as well just go out and get a couple.

There will be four different designs, one design every three months.

They will be issued for circulation in copper-plated zinc.

They will also be issued in Special Mint Sets in the same Copper-Zinc as the original 1909 Lincoln cents.

Finally they will also be issued a proofs but it's not specified whether they'll be the copper-plated or the copper-zinc composition. I would guess the plated ones.

Thus, there will be 12 different 2009 cents offered.

They have been released from the mint but it takes time to make it through the distribution channels.

They have said that the regular mint set this year will have the copper version in them. The special set going on sale Thursday at noon with the Lincoln dollar will have the four proof cents with it but they have not said if they are copper or plated zinc. There is no word yet as to what the compositon will be in the regular and silver proof sets.

By the way that Lincoln dollar/four cent set Thursday is limited to 50,000 sets.

Did you actually get confirmation from the Mint that this is going on sale Thursday?

    That's big news.

I've seen the release date for the Dollar/4 proof cent package set for a "spring" release but if is comes out on Thursday, as you seem to indicate, that's huge.

..are these rolls available from the mint (like the State quarters)? I find it very hard to locate bu rolls of nickels and cents at banks, have you tried? They do not have them and when they do they do not want to be bothered.

at my bank I can "order" state quarters and pres dollars but I can't "order" bu cents or nickels. I wonder if I will be able to "order" these special issue.

Thanks BizzyBill, I have read the press release.

Did you notice where it says:

"A special set containing a proof silver dollar and proof versions of four 2009 Lincoln one-cent coins-each bearing a design representative of a different aspect of Lincoln's life-is expected to be available in the spring. The special set will be limited to 50,000 units."

My point is that Thursday is not "the Spring" so I and several of my numismatic colleagues interpeted that to mean NOT February 12th.

The head teller at one of the local banks said she thought that the new lincolns were like the state Quarters and could be ordered by each bank. She is checking on this and will let me know this week. Here is something that Susan ( about.com/coins) wrote about the delay on the new cents. http://coins.about.com/b/2009/02/05/new-penny-circulation-will-be-delayed.htm

just curious, does Susan post here?

If you can order them like the state quarters that will completely change the scarcity of bu business strike coins. If you can't order them they will be very rare.

Nickeldude, I absolutely agree with you. I even wrote the director of the mint suggesting such a coin, Never heard back and this was at least two years ago.

Imagine a 2009-S vdb cent in the original design and composition. I think collectors would have trampled one another to get at it.

The cents were not made for collectors but for the general public, most of whom don't have a clue as to what a 1909S-VDB is. The idea is finding the damn things in your change, which except for the quarters, is very hard to do! (I finally got a 2008 nickel!).

Hello, new to the boards!!!! I have contacted my bank on this matter and the head teller I spoke with (she knows me, I always go in to get new coins) and she told me that they cannot specifically order the new pennies. She stated they are at the mercy of whatever the Fed. Reserve Bank sends them. She stated they had not gotten any pennies and they only receive one box a week, sometimes every two weeks as demand is not high for pennies. She suggested to contact the Fed. Bank in Chicago which I did and that gentleman told me that the Fed. Bank in Chicago had NOT received any new pennies from the mint and even if they had them they likely will not be shipping boxes out with just the new pennies. He stated the rolls would very likely be mixed or only have a couple rolls of the new pennies, and they only inject the new pennies as the old ones are rotated out of circulation. He suspected it would be a while before the new ones are out. Sorry for the long post.

My wife got two rolls from the bank today. They lady wasn't sure if they had anymore I'm going tomorrow. No.... I plan on keeping these two rolls. I already gave away one roll I got in Hodgensville on the day of release to my wife's class and teachers at her school. Ice

Wow, nice find for you and your wife. I just called the US Mint again to get some clarification on a couple of things. The lady I spoke with, who was very nice, stated the US Mint will be selling rolls of the lincoln cents from both P and D later in the Spring... they were just told this last night apparently. So those folks on ebay paying $20+ for a roll of fifty are going to feel mighty dumb when those rolls come out. Apparently there is very high demand for these coins and the Mint knows it. Also the regular proof sets will have the four pennies with the 95% copper make up. And there will be a set later this Spring or Summer the lady stated with the commemerative Lincoln silver dollar and four pennies as well. Whew...
