When a die become dirty, the devices, which are incuse on the die's surface, can become filled with dirt or grease. When this happens, the part of the die that is clogged will not leave a raised image on the coin's surface when it's struck. The image that is pressed into the die has tappered sides, so as it begins to fill with debris, the image that is left on the coin's surface will appear wider. As the die image continues to fill, the area will eventually become full of debris and fail to transfer any design to the coin's surface, resulting in missing details
Ok.. Because I am all new to this. I googled 'greaser' and this is the information that I found.. I was so confused!
so the whole design for a coin is hammered onto the die so the image on the die is actually recessed from the surface of the die. So ok I I understand how it loses detail from getting clogged. Is it a mint error, alright hang on what is a mint error, why do they make a coin valuable. You would think for a coin to have missing detail would be an error? Or is cause grease filled dies is a common problem
Common Problem , especially Lincoln Cents . I guess if it's extreme, then it may bring a premium value. Here are some examples:Lincoln Cents Online
So how were they able to determine that the engravers initials were ground down and not just filled with grease, on the 72 d half dollar with no fg

You have so many questions. That's good. It takes time to understand what Mint Errors are and aren't. The difference between Mint Errors and Varieties. The Major vs Minor Errors and Values. The value is the least important factor for me. I've been collecting Mint Errors since 1985 and have hundreds of attributed and raw examples. In all these years I have never sold any of them. Many do have a premium. But the majority you will find in circulation don't have or shouldn't have a premium. Such as Struck through grease issues. IMHO.
That's true google is a very good friend. I'll be honest, what sparked my interest was I read or watched something about people making a profit from coin roll hunting, I was like for real? So I bought a scope and I went through piece of change I had. I was hooked with covid happening I have not been able to obtain coins from the bank.... I have since developed a genuine interest in collecting coins, I have yet to send anything in for grading, but I purchased the membership. Idk looking at everything I bought since may I question myself about if it was a good idea for me to have blindly buy all these things from the mint, ebay, and other online stores. I spent like 300 at old coin supply in may and I didnt get my stuff till a week ago, and it was all crap from what I can tell. But i enjoy looking at my coins i do favorites, and ambitions to find attributes, finding gradable coins, and If i can make a profit off something i can part with then that's cool too.
