Hey guys im just a starting coin collector, couple months back i found couple half dollars and a couple polish coins that my mom has been collecting since we got here 14 years ago. I just fell in love with coins lol. I like the way they look and I decided to start collecting them. I was just wondering somethings about half dollars and maybe the price of them, Im just curious :smile sorry for the bad pictures maybe i can make them better if you cant see something
Welcome to the forum! Kennedy half dollars are a nice way to start collecting. You can still get them at the bank for face value, and the ones you don't need for your collection, spend at Walmart or someplace, but don't take back to the same bank or they will quit helping. Maybe someone in your family has a different bank they can take your left overs. 1964 are 90% silver, not many left in bank rolls any more, but except for high grades can be gotten for close to just the price of the silver. 1965-1970 are 40% silver, occasionally in bank rolls that people bring back and don't know dates. I think I saw one in your group. 1971- on usually can be found , except for certain years. Also, proofs, etc, also can be purchased. Here is a value guide for Kennedys. http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/prices/kenhlv/pricesgd.shtml Have fun, Jim
The 1968-D in your photo is 40% silver and worth around $3.50 (melt value). To help you get started in coin collecting I recommend that you get a copy of the Red Book and read it. You may be able to get a copy at your local library. Good luck collecting.
Ive seen pictures of coins on ebay and people claim that it is the first ever of that year how do i know it is what they say it is? What about the coin says its the first ever of the year in the U.S. mint.
I think you are talking about "First strikes" or "Early Release" designation. Read this. http://coins.about.com/od/coingrading/a/first_strike_co.htm Just a way to sucker more money from the collector. In my opinion. Jim
Haha ya you are right and i agree with the fact that its probably just a way to make an insane amount of money off of something that shouldnt be that much.
WELCOME TO THE FORUM AND TO COIN COLLECTING. One thing you may want to look into a the Red Book by Whitman Publishing. That book will give you lots of info on all US coins. Just ignor the prices. It can be found on ebay, Amazon.com, coin stores, coin shows and lots of other web sites. I used to get mine on the Walmart Book web site but not sure if they still carry them.
