I know absolutely nothing about tones so I was wondering is this a tone or a damaged coin? These are extremly hard to photograph. Took me 25 minutes to get these. The obverse seems to have a little more blue on the left. Anything would be great. Mark And how could I tell the difference between toning and damage.
I am not an expert either - but if I recall correctly they talk about MS70 which will turn a wheatie blue. I have one that was processed like that - kind a cool. Anyway I am not sure that is what was done to your coin - I think it came into contact with some chemical that caused the damage. Actually I found the rim ding more distracting that the coin itself.
IMO the coin was cleaned. And whatever was used to clean the coin is not allowing it to retone naturally.
The coin would definitely be considered damaged but not because of the toning. It's been harshly cleaned but it also has a huge rim ding on the reverse.
Besides being cleaned, baked and damaged the coin actually has some nice detail. I mean if we wanted to say something positive about it.
The coin has the appearance of one that has come into contact with soap (as in a washing machine or MS 70 -- more likely the former than the latter).
