I have read a lot about getting back dates on buffalos, but is there any way to restore them on dateless SLQs? Thanks.

I'm told it doesn't work quite the same on silver as it does on nickel, but you could use Nik-A-Date.

I was told vinegar would do it for buffs. Would it help SLQs as well?

Yeah if ya want to wait a few months it might work.

I'm going to the coin shop today and I'll check for Nic-a-Date, but otherwise, I'll just soak it in vinegar.

Nik-A-Date will not work, it works on Nickel, not silver. Sulfuric (IIRC) acid works, that's VERY nasty stuff to play with.

The product that used to work was called "Silver Date Back" and is no longer made. Also, heavily worn coins may never be restorable.

No I have a dateless SLQ in about VG or better and I think it could benefit from date restoration. Do you think I could find the stuff on eBay?

    You do realize that
    • you would be physically altering the coin
    • in an easily detectable manner
    • that would reduce its numismatic value
    don't you?

Two of your three are correct, but the lowering its numismatic value... it is worth melt value now and would be worth melt value if it is altered.

Yeah I checked and there's nothing, but the vinegar looks like it's kind of working.

rld14, Wow that was a long time ago.....I think it was taken off the hobby market because it was based on cyanide ( if I recall correctly, never used it myself).

I wouldn't soak it in vinegar. It'll probably turn it black, and I doubt it'll bring up a date. I don't know about Nick-a-Date on silver, never tried the product. I'd forget about vinegar on silver, though.

Well I didn't mention that it is also cleaned, so I think it could benefit from a little darkening.

We'll keep those baby blues wide open for you. And don't forget that nickel in that other thread; we want to get a look at that, too. :thumb:
