Wow, just wow! Antigonos, Taras, and the Larisa stater are my favorites. The Larisa portrait is so fine, which is a bit unfair as it steals the thunder from the magnificent horse on the reverse.
Congratulations on these mighty fine additions, both lists are amazing! It's nearly impossible to pick a favorite, but if I really, really had to, i'd pick the Aegina Stater (I love the tortoise!) and the Antoninius Pius Italia sestertius. Not only is it a beauty, it was also struck in celebration of the 900th anniversary of Rome! I'm very curious to see your other coins in your collection. Do you happen to have a website or online photo album somewhere?
Wonderful selection. I especially admired the AEGYPTO CAPTA - I've been wanting one of those for years
More than great coins, my favorites are Syracuse and Octavian denarius (the teeth on the crocodile are clearly visible). Congratulations!!
Terence, all 10 coins are gems ! The stater from Rhodes with the portrait of Apollo is my favorite . This is Greek portraiture at its best. My 2nd favorite is the drachm of Hadrian & Nilus . This coin must be the finest example of its type in the world . My 3rd favorite is the stunning tortoise stater from Aegina . This gem sports a perfect well centered strike, rarely seen for this coin type.
An absolutely wonderful group of coins! I enjoyed looking over all of them several times asking myself what I'd choose if I was allowed to have one from each group. I chose the Nagidos stater and the Augustus crocodile. Just dreaming, of course!
I do not know if it is proper to place my "also rans" here but here they are This is the coin that I couldn't find and therefore did not put in my top 10. This was a last minute substitution and so here it is 1. Teos Ar Stater 540-478 BC Obv, Eagle griffen seated right Rv Quadripartite incuse square. Balcer 2 11.78 grms 19mm What attracted me to this coin is the wonderfully detailed head of the griffen. One time many years ago i nearly bought one of these that was all but headless. I am so glad that some one beat me out on that coin. 2. Euthydemos I King of Bactria Ar Tetradrachm Balkh Obv Head right diademed Rv. Herakles seated left. HGC 40 210/208-206 BC. 16.58 grms 30mm What I like about this coin is the portrait. One can see that this man is aging and becoming a little bit less vigorous than he was in his earlier portraits. You can almost get the sense that he is tired. I think Euthydemos I has some of the most interesting portraits seen within the lexicon of Bactrian portraits. 3. Faustina Jnr Ae Sestertius 161-176 AD Obv Bust right diademed and draped. Rv Fecunditas standing left holding two children in her arms and flanked by two more. RIC 1635 23.74 grms 31 mm This coin was initially slated to become one of my top 10 but I chose another instead. What sets this coin apart is its wonderful condition and the fact that it doesn't look like it has ever been messed with. I bought this coin at the NYINC and I have been happy with it ever since. 4. C. Coelius Caldus Ar Denarius 51 BC. Obv Head of C. Coelius Caldus right Rv. Head of Sol right radiate. Crawford 437/1b RBW 1550 This coin illustrated 4.00 grms 18 mm I have always found the coins from the Roman Republic truly fascinating The coins from the last century BC with the portraits of glorious ancestors are an interesting bridge between the portraits issued by the Hellenistic kings to those struck under the empire. Well this it it. I wish to thank everyone who commented for their very generous comments. Despite everything else that is going on which is really very tiring for me coin wise it has been a really great year and one that will be very difficult to replicate. Most of my most impressive purchases have been done either at NYINC or the series of auctions which I like to refer to as the October maelstrom.
That is a really wonderful griffin stater. Cool style griffin head and muscular legs. The Faustina Jr Sestertius is also a very nice one.
Nice Teos Stater. I was after the one in Leu and got beat by a couple increments. Those are cool coins and yours has a great style.
All excellent coins! Of the Greek coins, I really like #8, of the Roman coins, #2 is a classic that I could see adorning a book cover (especially the reverse); now someone only needs to write the book.
Wow, what a year! Congrats! These are spectacular. My favorites are the Sev. Alexander aureus and the Himera tetradrachm, but all of these are just beautiful, thanks for sharing.
I can only add to the accolades already expressed by others. Your collection is one of magnificent coins. A thing of rare beauty.
Fantastic coins! I really love the style of your Tiberius, but my favorite is the Aegypto Capta. I have always loved that type, particularly the crocodile with open mouth variety!
Lovely collection!....Don't know where to start! I have a soft spot for Antoninus Pius so the Italia really appeals and of course lovely Griffin......Great year!
