With everyone missing in person shows and bidding heavy in auctions, I’ve been losing a lot. I’d been looking to add a Victoriatus and managed to win this one in the most recent Naville auction. It isn’t the most beautiful but I really liked how the borders are complete and round on an irregular flan. Victoriatus from 211, AR 18mm., 3.37g. Laureate head of Jupiter r. Rev. Victory r., crowning trophy; in exergue, ROMA. Sydenham 230. Crawford 53/1. Attractive old cabinet tone, well centred, Good Very Fine/Very Fine. From a European collection. I’m sure there are a few nice ones out there so please share yours. Jim
It sure is a nice and heavy victoriatus. Mine is "narrow" in comparison Republic, Victoriatus - Minted circa 211-206 BC Head of Jupiter right Victory and trophy. ROMA at exergue, linked V and B in field 3.11 gr Ref : RCV #51 Q
Nice one, @H8_modern . I like those large flans on the Victoratii. I have several of this denom. Here are a couple large flans. RR Victoriatus after 211 BCE Jupiter Victory Trophy VF Craw 53-1 Syd 83 RR AR Victoriatus 211-206 BC Jupiter Victory crowning trophy S 49 Cr 44-1
Nice one @H8_modern . I also like the large flan. These are fun coins with lots of history. Mine doesn’t have the full border like yours but I definitely have the irregular flan thing going. Roman Republic Anonymous AR Victoriatus, mint in Sicily, struck ca. 211-208 BC Dia.: 17 mm Wt.: 3.3 g Obv.: Head of Jupiter right Rev.: ROMA; Victory right crowning trophy Ref.: Crawford 70/1, Brinkman Group B
I have a few of these. I think I'm up to 15 at this point. Here are my 3 favorites: This one is my favorite I think. A very rare variety with Q on shield first published this year in the Numismatic Chronicle. By happy coincidence I spotted this example after reading an early draft of the paper. The variety hid in plain sight for many years as a worn example from this reverse die, with Q on shield worn off, is in Kestner-Hannover. I spotted this on on eBay and placed the largest bid I think I've ever placed at auction because I knew I might never see another example - thankfully it hammered for a fraction of my max. Roman Republic AR Victoriatus(2.87g, 16mm, 2h), "Q" series. 209-208 B.C., Apulian(Luceria?) mint. Laureate head of Jupiter right. Border of dots / Victory standing right, crowning trophy with wreath; on trophy shield, Q; Q between. ROMA in exergue. Line border. Crawford 102/1 var(style & Q on shield). Cf. "A Large Hoard of Roman Republican Victoriati", Pierluigi Debernardi, NC 2019(173) for discussion of "102Q" variety. This is the rare "incuse legend" victoriatus from Spain. Previously extremely rare, a handful of examples come to market each decade. This one is worn and has a thick patina but I was happy to own any example of the type. Roman Republic AR Victoriatus(3.10g). Anonymous, ca. 211 B.C., military mint in Spain. Laureate head of Jupiter right. Border of dots / Victory standing right, crowning trophy with wreath. Below, ROMA incuse on tablet. Line border. Crawford 96/1 This victoriatus with staff symbol is perhaps the finest known example of the type, and certainly the finest I know of in private hands. It was another eBay find, uncleaned and unattributed which I sent off for cleaning. It has toned considerably since then and I need to take another photo. Roman Republic AR Victoriatus(3.07g, 18mm, 4h). Anonymous("Staff and club" series). 209-208 B.C., Spanish mint. Laureate head of Jupiter right. Border of dots / Victory standing right, crowning trophy with wreath; Staff between. ROMA in exergue. Line border. Crawford 106/1; Sydenham 209; RSC 24n.
Excellent "big flan" editions @H8_modern and @Alegandron - this one just barely fits on the small and light flan. I am calling this one Crawford 44/1, but the thick base still leaves a little wiggle room for doubt. Anonymous, 211-208 BC, AR Victoriatus (16.8mm, 2.60 g). Obv: Laureate head of Jupiter right with disorganized beard Rev: Victory standing right with wings engraved with simple features of lines holding up a wreath, erecting a trophy with greaves and no skirt and no base, ROMA in exergue Ref: Crawford 44/1 Group A
Speaking of big flans. Here's one with a nice big flan with full borders on each side. These 53/1 victoriati commonly come with nice big flans like this like the OP coin. Roman Republic AR Victoriatus(17mm, 3.08g, 4h). Anonymous, after 211 B.C., Rome mint. Laureate head of Jupiter right. Border of dots / Victory right crowning trophy; in exergue, ROMA. Line border. Crawford 53/1; Sydenham 83; RSC 9. Privately purchased from CNG, 8/4/2016, ex Volteia Collection
