I know, I know, probably PMD , but I thought I'd run it by y'all. Those are raised bits of copper (bronze) at the top of the line of damage, coming off to the right of Lincoln's forehead.
Meow will disagree with you on that one. Meow thinks it is damage from the edge of a large coin like a half dollar. The damage on the head and field are the reeded edge pattern from a hit. They all line up.
Everybody is wrong. That is a Lamination issue. I've seen them before. That is NOT a reeded edge hit.
Very interesting and I've not seen anything like it before. I hope it can be authenticated by others. Thanks for the post.
I don't think it's a Reeded coin hit. The spaces are to wide. Can you explain how this is a lamination error? I can't recall ever seeing one that looks like this one does.
I was with the cat on this one, but I've learned to to bet against the PaddyMan either... We got ourselves a rumble...
Laminations are Planchet Defects. They appear as Cracks, folded Pre-strike and Post-strike and delaminated. I don't know exactly how the De-Laminated issue occured on the Cent in question but I have seen it many times over the decades.
I was thinking it was a struck through. This does not look like damage to me. In the case of a struck through, this one could have stuck to the die and struck another, or it stuck to the coin and fell off somewhere in circulation.
Thank you. I've never seen a lamination that looks like this. It basically comes and goes in small places, for lack of a better word.
I'm grateful for the attention for my humble coin. I'm wondering if everyone is taking into account the fact that there is a flap of sorts, at the top. Maybe you are. Anyway...a few different angles.
The best explanation comes for paddyman, I would not question his expertise, he knows what he is talking about. Good luck
IMO, it doesn't look like a lamination. I think the repeating pattern is too regular to have come from contamination or a void that was originally in an ingot that was subsequently rolled into a strip. Also, while I'm not certain, there might be some raised metal on the rim side of the indents. That's why I believe it's damage and not an error
