Hey guys just got around to scanning better images of the Legal Tender $20 Large Red Seal and the $1 1891.... Thought you might enjoy seeing it a little better. The 1891 $1 will be added in a few min as well. Just click on the image for a larger version. Enjoy RickieB
Daggarjon.... Indeed it is Edwin M. Stanton, Lincoln's Sec of War! Once a Rival and then a Commrade...he was accused in being involved in Lincoln's Death/Assination by not assinging proper body guards when Lincolon requested it of him. BTW...my scanner is doing a horrible job on the greens..it does not do the notes justice!! RickieB
oh i know... i have the same note, albiet in a slightly lower grade so i know what the note looks like... my imagination is filling in what your scanner didnt pick up ... i see the note in all its glory... VERy nice
Great Notes Rickie! In fact, we've just started studying about Lincoln and his Cabinet in US History class. Just amazing! Greg
Which was quite ironic, considering Booth's assassination plot targeted Stanton too. Stanton survived because the would-be assassin oddly chose a knife rather than a gun as a weapon, and the knife kept deflecting off of Stanton's back brace (he hurt his back in a wagon accident a few days earlier) and thus never delivered any fatal wounds, though he received several nasty cuts. The assassination plot also included vice-president Andrew Johnson, but the person who was supposed to shoot him lost the nerve and never went through with it. If you've seen pictures of Johnson it's easy to believe someone would find him very intimidating! In the end the only target of the plot Booth successfully took out was Lincoln. The conspiracy was thus only 1/3 successful.
Troodon....I think you have Stanton and Seward mixed up! You are pretty close but it was actually "Sec of State Seward" that had the carriage accident and was bed ridden with a broken jaw and arm. His family was involved as well and pretty sure the daughter was mangled in the attack (by Paine) as well as the brother but no one was killed in the attack. Paine could not deliver the fatal blow due the metal cage/harness around Seward at the time. The were no lights on candel light or gas lamps which hindered the muder plot as well. Stanton actually took over as acting President and never left Lincolns side, thus setting up a command post from the room in which Lincolon was carried to and died in. Stanton refused to provide Lincoln with his body huard of choice, Thomas Eckert and has since prompted research to wether or not he was involved in the conspiracy. You are correct about Andrew Johnson, as the would be attacker (Atzerodt) did not follow through with the plan at the Kirkwood house where Jonson was staying. The assination plot was include Lincoln, Johnson and Seward carried out by Booth, Piane,Herod and Atzerodt. Herod was the one who never showed up after it was put into motion. Stanton mounted the Largest Manhunt is US History at the time and as well all know 12 days later Booth was cornered at Garetts Farm and shot once through the neck. He was pulled from the burning barn and drug over to a large tree where he died watching thesun rise. RickieB
Troodon, Might I recommend a Great Book on the account of the Plan, Plot and involvement of Lincolons assination? Forget the author but the Title is "ManHunt" The Historical facts are some of the best I have ever read. Regards, RickieB
