Put in my bid for this coin this morning just before going to work. I really did not expect to win it. When i came back, surprise!

Seems like a nice addition to my late date collection.

    What do you guys think?

She's real nice, Ed. Don' know how to grade her, so can't help you there. I think you should send it to me, though, before the German Police try to confiscate it.

    Nice.
    Looks original.
And I agree with the VF.

Not bad. I'd be a bit concerned with the green I see on the reverse.

Please keep us updated when it arrives!

I see doubling of Liberty's facial profile! Cool.

Nice Coin. I would give it a VF-35.

Thanks everyone. I saw that double profile and thought it looked really interesting.
This appears to be a nice coin overall, in spite of the rub on the top of hair and above the head. We'll see when it gets here and i have it on-hand. Maybe a candidate for Desertgems' Verdigone?

Concerning the attribution, i was looking at Goldbergs recent sale of the Naftzger Collection to see if i could attribute it with any of the 1831s in that sale (beautiful coins there BTW!)
but was unable to. If anybody can help here, i would greatly appreciate it.

I have the impression that attributing these late dates by Newcomb numbers is even more difficult than attributing the 1793-1814 series by Sheldon numbers....

    Thanks,

    Eduard

I believe it's an N-3 (R-1). Please check for recutting to the right of the N and above the E in CENT to confirm.

p.s. these middle dates are a bit tougher than the earlier dates, but NOWHERE near as hard as the late dates (say beyond 1840). Unlike the steam-pressed coins of the later period, the letters were punched by hand into the dies used to strike these middle-dates, so slight positioning differences make attribution tedious but not difficult. In the case of this coin, it was the position of the 2nd S in STATES versus the leaves below it which were used to attribute the coin.

I'm outnumbered here but I don't see anything keeping it from being EF-40.

p.p.s. Eduard, you really should consider buying a copy of Wright and/or Noyes if you're serious about collecting these coins. ;)

The resolution on my phone's display isn't that great, but from what I can see I'd call it an above-average EF40. With better pics and from my latop, it might look better or worse. It looks extremely nice anyways, great buy!

    Another winner, Eduard !

I'm following in Mike's footsteps (again !). I concur... I think it's N-3 r.1. The reverse positioning of the leaf under the D in UNITED clinched it for me (along with others). And that E in STATES.

I've always felt these are a little easier, particularly for the reverse dies.

Attributing certain coins is maddening. Capped Bust Halves. Orienting those cockamamie star points to the denticles. :desk: Have mercy.

Awesome coin. Could use verdigone or Blue Ribbon and acetone if you were concerned about the verdigris.

Once again thank guys for your comments - a wide range of opinions on the grade there.

And thank You Leadfoot for the attribution. I will try to get a copy of the Noyes book when i visit the US this summer.

Eduard - if you wish to wait so as to avoid shipping, customs issues then you might find it wise to have the book here waiting for you when you arrive. If the seller is in the US you could have the book shipped to folks you are going to visit. But then you might even be able to the book or books you want from a European seller.

Use the links you find here - BOOKS - they are search engines for books that search sellers all over the world.
