Good morning all... So this morning I posted this specimen on a thread for the Thanksgiving holiday. I took this coin in a trade a few years back. I am not a collector of commemorative coins, I do own a few but only a half dozen at most. So let me post some images...So you can see my finds on the 100 year old fifty cent piece. Now there is a die crack variety well known discovered years ago...it a large crack known between the main mast and the mizzen mast. However I found another neat breat....as well as a clash with no idea what caused it... Have a look and post your thoughts. The last image is the clash off the ships stern looks like D and then a loop up top of the cabin,
Ive noticed how many file lines there are on this coin....they really lapped this die ,now trying to solve those two clashes I have no clue to where on either side thay may have come form. Any possibility that it was another die it clashed with?
The clash at the stern of the ship is from IN GOD WE TRUST on the obverse. From the bow to the L just looks like the water line. I'm not sure what I'm looking at in the others.
I would have to agree. The The top image is the water line and the bottom is the D from GOD. The others, I can't place.
I was thinking that the only two items would be the U and D. The other is a die crack very thin one running down the water line to mid ships then in the water if vets thicker. Thanks for your replies.
95% of the coins on line have the file lines that I've looked at here you go but it isnt a fake ive been collecting way to long to be fooled, and even have dealers at shows asking me my opinion on a coin. Has it been dipped you betcha
Again I took a trade and really didnt give it a second look.....unlike the 1847 SLQ I cherry picked off you .....you know John asked me not to pick his inventory....lol He will also tell you of a few pm's where he had missed a variety and I gave him the heads up. Its all good we should all have each others backs. Thank you and congrats on your book. Something I plan to do after I retire....after 50 + years in the food business ive got enough to write 2 books.
