Bought this coin for a song ( ok, less than a song, a jingle )off another dealer at the Mesa club show, off it goes today to PCGS for review. I'll update this thread as I gain info. My first time thru the system.

Has anybody else here done this?

I LOVE the color on that lincoln. It's too bad about that corrosion, though it's been my experience that its somewhat common to find that on early PCGS and NGC slabbed lincolns. I bought a 1909-s vdb NGC XF-45 about 6 months ago that I ended up returning due to a similar spot. :-(

I have a similar coin in an NGC slab that is going in as well. A MS-65 BR 1924-D. The slab is out of date for the guarantee, so it's NCS then back to NGC I guess.

Why are you sending in for review? Is there something wrong with the grade?

Look at the corrosion on the reverse, it has turned in the holder:eek:

Maybe a silly question, but I gotta ask...

Why would you buy a coin then turn around and send it to PCGS for review? Why not just buy a coin without problems in the first place. It's not like 14-D's are hard to find in this condition.

    Just wondering...Mike

p.s. I have not sent a coin to PCGS for grade review, although I have two ready to be sent -- one has PVC (a Jefferson) and another putty (a $10 eagle).

    I have done this before.

I purchased a coin; an early Lincoln, I don't remember the date or grade. It listed in the PCGS price guide for $300. The dealer wanted $130, which was about 15-20 percent below bid. It had a large, ugly copper spot.

I sent it in for spot review, and PCGS offered me $250, which I promptly accepted.

That's my only experience, but I will definitely pick up any of these I see in the future that are largely discounted because of copper spots.

ah, ok. Will they try to clean it or do they just re-grade it?

    Edit: Borgovan answered my question.

It was a package deal, all or nothing, I wanted the rest of the package and yes, I paid next to nothing due to the corrosion. Borgovan just explained my plans as well.

  13. I don't know much about slabs, but if the coin shown id what it appears to be, then you got your money's worth. I wanted to post a photo here, but I guess I don't have enough "whiskers' yet. I may not be around, at the rate I'm going! I have been a member since '05, but don't post much, and never anything like the one I tried, and was told I din't have the minimum posts, or similar.
I wanted to post these, but I guess it is a "NO-NO"!

It is obvious this is in thw weong section, but I don't know my wat around, and don't consider this worth spending any more time on. Please mopve it to where it should be, and maybe I'll find that place. If this is not convenient, just delete the whole post

  14. I have one thing in common with maybe one, or two members, or possibly the same member, that posted the came item as I ,. on another forum. The name, and item came yo in world coins ID, or tokens, ID, and CT was mentioned as one source. The other is CCf, and also CC.com, under "What is it"?
Later: I have had a lort of trouble with this forum, trying to navigate, but I guess it is because I don't "hang out here, much"!

I sent my 1941-S INVERTED MM nickel back to PCGS for review. It had PVC on it and I wasn't sure what they would do, but those coins aren't the easiest to find. Anywho....after a few weeks they sent it back...PVC is gone and you can't tell it was there.

It did cost me shipping, but I think it was worth it.

I would prefer a buyback or a replacement. I think the corrosion will not come off without permanant damage. On the phone, they told me to resubmit, check the " other" box when selecting the tier level, write in appearance review and only include return shipping.

I think you've got the right idea. Let us know how it turns out.

Oh, by the way, if they do buy the coin from you, after they've refunded your money, make sure to ask for your return postage to be refunded (after all; they're not mailing anything back to you if they purchase the coin.) I had to call them once or twice to get mine refunded.

I didn't realize that you could do this. Does PCGS offer a warranty that coins will not corrode in their holders?

Correct. They do not slab damaged coins (or didn't used to, at least), and they warrant that coins will not turn once slabbed. This especially applies to copper, which can look fine when it goes in the holder, but can develop copper spots later.

Well my package from NCS arrived today, I can now send back my 1924-D that has started a PVC farm since I bought it in LB. I did ship the 14-D out as well. Thats 2 coins, one of each PCGS and NGC. We'll see who works quicker and better.

I'll post again when I hear something.

Did you happen to take pics of that coin before you noticed the PVC ? I ask because it would be helpful to folks to see such a coin - then see it once the PVC becomes visible - then see it once again after conservation.
