It looks like someone had an incredibly valuable coin and could not resist over-dipping it to improve the appearance, and managed to destroy a good part of its value. An expensive lesson on why cleaning a coin is one of the worst decisions you can make.

The first one looks dipped. I don't know about the second one...

:DOdd, they describe the second one as a "classic mercury dime". Sure looks like a Peace $ to me.

The 2nd coin doesn't look over dipped or cleaned to me. A really nice 21 Peace Dollar!

I'll wager the coin's bodybag would have read cleaned, and yes it is obvious to me from the photo -- this coin in this condition should be really lustrous, yet it is not.

p.s. the second coin also looks odd.

I agree that the 1928-P Peace Dollar appears to be over-dipped! The 1921-P Peace Dollar appears to have honest, bad toning and the wear over Miss Liberty's hair contributed to the AU-58 Grade. Both coins appear that the use of other TPG's than the one's which slabbed them, might have had better results! I believe that ANACS would have given the 1928-P an honest grade and might note "Cleaned" on the label but which is better, "Genuine with no grade" or "MS-64 Cleaned"??!! Also, the 1921-P might have done better if graded by PCGS or even ANACS as it may have received a bump up in grade due to the somewhat rarity of the coin but also due to the much nicer (MS-62/63) details on the Reverse!

I guess I can't tell a lot that the 1928 was overdipped. It has some dull luster, but I guess I can't see it that well. I am assuming because the cartwheel line are not distinct and seem to blend into the darker areas on the coin.
