Hello everyone, I was looking at some of my sets. I happened to notice that the BIG IKE does not have the (D) mint mark. Like the rest of the coins in this set. Could this be an ERROR COIN?...any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I thought you might be able to tell from the obverse design. see ODV-008 and ODV-009 http://varietyvista.com/13 Eisenhower Dollars/Obverse Design Varieties.htm We are gonna have to see some clear photos or the obverse and reverse in order to help. Most likely it is a packaging mistake.
If it does not have a D, it is not an error. It is not a Denver coin with a missing D. It is a Philly coin in the package with other D coins.
I was under the assumption that the Denver sets were assembled in Denver and the Philly sets were assembled in Philly or did they ship all the coins to Philly for assembly?
It would help if you took a photo of the Ike and all of the cello around it without all of the glare.
You removed the 'Denver' Ike from the packaging? That was your only evidence of the incorrect packaging. It is now a Philly Ike.
It does appear that the cello is slit open in the first pic. Even if it's just an illusion in the photo, it's only considered a packaging mistake. Unfortunately, packaging errors often REDUCE the value of the set. Most people buy mint sets to get 1 of every coin made for that year. Your set has 2 P mint Ikes and no D mint Ike. If I was looking to buy a 76 mint set, I would skip yours.
It is possible when they put some of these sets together, for whatever reason, they didn't have Denver Ikes available, and just put Philly Ikes in some of them. It's not really a big deal. I bet you could go online (Ebay, w/e) buy some 1976 Denver mint sets and you might get a Philly coin in there.
I'm a little slow on the uptake at times so you're saying all of these sets are put together at a central location?
Nope, the coin is fine, the packaging is in error. Packaging errors usually command just a very small premium, like a dollar or two just as a novelty. Yes, they are not packaged at the individual mints. It used to be the sets were assembled at the San Francisco Mint but I don't know if that is still the case or if they are assembled by an outside contractor.
