I have just accuired some french and spanish coins. They are very light, and feel like they are made from aluminium. They are various denominations.Does anybody know what they may be. Andrew
aluminium french coins are pretty common. I think there is a valuable variety or two - hard to say what you have without seeing them, or getting more information. I don't know of any spanish aluminum coins, offhand, but there may be. modern pesatas are nickel. I think. If you could give some discriptions and years, you can probably get more information. Also, you can look at your local library for a copy of Krause 'Standard Catalog of World Coins, 1901-current'. If you can find a copy of that book, just look under france and spain, and you should have no problems finding what you're looking for.
Thanks for the reply, the coins are as light as a feather.I dont feel they were meant for circulation.
Ah, but they were. Aluminum coins are light, and easily subject to damage and hits from other heavier weight coins, but they still keep getting produced by the millions and millions.
