Why do you collect paper money?

I have only just recently started collecting paper money. My interest is only in hyperinflationary notes. I only have a $100 billion note from Zimbabwe (can't wait to get a hold of the trillion dollar notes), I have just completed my 1923ish Germany set (just scored a 200 milliarden note!), and I have 3, 100,000,000 b.‑pengő Hungary notes on the way. I enjoy studying monetary history.

US silver certificates and gold certificates are of interest to me also, but I have yet to acquire any.

I have a collection of hyperinflation notes too... so far I have one note each from every hyperinflation period that caused notes to be denominated 1 billion or higher (not a complete set of all such notes, but one from every period). Post WWI Germany, WWII Greece, post WWII Hungary, breakup of Yugoslavia (including one from Serbian Krajina), and Zimbabwe. (The 500 billion dinar note I have from Yugoslavia is the most zeroes ever to be on a circulating note! Hungary had a higher denomination than that, but they just used words for the denomination, they didn't display all the digits.)

Trying to collect US $2 bills by series... so far have every small size except for 1928A and 1928B.

Have tons of world notes... especially like notes with dragons on them, but collect just about anything I find interesting.

Click on the ling in my sig to see what I have... have everything catalogged there.

Didn't Zimbabwe's "trillion" series just break that record? I *thought* I saw a picture with all the zeroes written out....

The $10 trillion has all of the zeroes. Haven't seen any $100 trillion pics yet.

I thought that I replied to this already but I don't see it here hmmm... Anyway, I love dragons. I've started collecting coins with them. Just scored the lunar. Never thought to look at dragons on paper monies. Will have to add that to my addiction list :D

Bah it had the record for 16 years, and then Zimbabwe goes and beats it... now I have to get another!

Yes the new note's 13 zeroes beats the old Yugoslavian record of 11.

I think a lot of enterprising Zimbabweans are realizing that their best hope for getting any value out of their money that's literally not worth the paper it's printed on is finding collectors who will pay more than the actual face value for the novelty.

Actually it's a pretty nice note in its own right. I'll probably get one at least. There's hundreds being sold on eBay.

Dragons on paper money is a bit more of a challenge... obviously most are on Asian notes, but if you think outside the box and search carefully you can find them on other notes too. The 1904 German 5 mark note is a classic and a great way to start.

The real challenge is searching for variety... want to avoid getting dozens that all looks basically the same. Every once in a while find a nice one in a store or on eBay that looks signifcantly different than the rest... just won a great 10,000 won note from South Korea with a great dragon boldly on the center of the front! Can't wait for it to actually show up.

Got a bunch of dragons on coins too... mostly China and Japan obviously, but one of my favorites is a Welsh Dragon on a 2000 sterling 1 pound coin from the UK.

Thanks much for the tips! The German 5 mark looks like a great one to start with.

I've been drooling over the Isle of Man 'angel and dragon' gold coin for a while.

I started collecting notes to help me pick up chicks....sadly, it hasn't worked very well. ;)

I love the artwork/engraving on older currency and world notes. How can you not get excited by the Educational series of silver certs???

And ScottishMoney, you have a wicked eye for the ladies!!

From what I hear even the 10 trillion may be beaten... they were planning a 20 trillion, 50 trillion, and 100 trillion too... but they may not actually be released now as they renumerated the currency again (1 quadrillion 3rd Zimbabwe dollars = 1 4th Zimbabwe dollar. The 10 trillion note is thus worth one 4th Zimbabwe cent). Who knows? The currency has become so rediculously worthless that what few cash transactions even happen in Zimbabwe anymore are usually conducted in US dollars or South African rand.

The Zimbabwe dollar may very well be giving the old Hungarian pengo a run for its money for the most worthless currency in history.

Without getting too political here, the next time you hear about how bad the US economy supposedly is... just be glad you don't live in Zimbabwe!

All of those ebay pre-sellers of the Z$100 trillion bill are going to be up a creek with ebay/paypal fees if they have to give out refunds. haha.

I can't imagine living in Zimbabwe with massive hyperinflation. I just hope that hyperinflation doesn't show up on our shores.

That kind of sucks. I just want it for the design though. I'd definitely buy one for bullion pricing.
