Hello all, need some help with estimated value of these two. These were in my uncles collection and I am lost with Morgan grading and values. These two represent two of the better of the 10 I have from his collection. Check out the Liberty area of the coin on the left, looks like maybe a die fault of some sort. Thanks in advance for your help. Super sized image link. http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/6517/1884oble3.jpg http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/1679/1234ip8.jpg
Those are 1884-O Morgans BTW. Left one has a Die Crack, it's probably a listed VAM http://www.vamworld.com/1884-O+VAMs
My pleasure. Looks like the one on the right is pretty darn well struck for a New Orleans coin as well.
I agree the one on the right has great detail for a New Orleans. As for a grade maybe it's just the picture but both the coins appear to be cleaned.
I used a flatbed scanner to take these pictures, I will get out the better digital and post some better pictures later. I am not sure of it's history as it was passed along to me from my uncles safe deposit box after his passing. I can see where the one on the left looks like it came in contact with something abrasive but what indications of cleaning do you see on the right coin? Thanks
if you use a digital camera, you will get MUCH better pics! use macro mode... usually the flower symbol on your camera. for some reason scanning them makes them look really dull. takes away the luster...
That's maybe it, because in the pictures the coins seem to have no luster. Also those 2 areas on both reverses look very similar, almost like one coin was on top of the other. Digital Pics will definitely help, and there are also a ton of great people on this site with alot more knowledge than me.
IMO I with the new pics I still think the coin has been cleaned. It seems to have lost it's luster. The coin also has many fine scratches across both the obv, and rev which can usually be attributed with some kind of harsh cleaning. But then again that's just my opinion.
