Ive looked everywhere and I cant find what this is. Heres the story. A friend of mine's mom when she was a little girl in soviet controlled Ukraine back in the 60s was playing out in a garden and found this token. Ive looked everywhere with several coin buddies of mine and cant find out what it is. I would really appreciate some help with this.
anyone read Russian? that may be the best way to figure this out even a few words could help a lot in particular the bigger word below the bust nothing about the says "soviet" to me but It has been years since I studied that in depth
Does it say Sergei (Сергей) on the column? Something like that. I'm having trouble making out the text. Edit: ok, I think it might say Сергей Александрович on the pillar, referring to Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich.
@The Eidolon ...thanks for that link. Interesting read. I guess the Romanovs were compelled to remember him with a token/medal after his assassination, but from his bio, it sounds as if he was not a very nice person...imo...Spark
Still no answers on what it is huh. Well I spend around 2 hours researching trying to find out what it is and found nothing so im going to guess this is a hard one
Well, not much help. The large letters in the middle of the thing on the reverse is “SERGEI,” so common Russian name...
It fits. I was looking up neoclassical building in Russia and from 1905-1918 was a major time of neoclassical art and design in Russia
So we got the Main guy being shown But can we find if this is a official issue by the government or a private issue
I don't think it's a coin or token. There's too little text for a coin, and even tokens usually have a denomination or issuer name. I think it might be closer to a commemorative medal. I did a bunch of image searches and didn't see anything very close. Hope you have some luck.
There seems to be alot of writing below the building but from the images and given the damage I can not seem to tell for sure
