I was going through some half dimes before listing and checking them over and seeing if there were any varieties that I noticed and I was thinking that this may be the 3/inverted 3 error? I’m not 100% sure but the 3 is closed up a bit more then others not if this variety and has spots around it that are sticking out awkwardly. It’s hard to see but the right back of the 3 looks to have the Longacre style how it slightly sticks out, but I don’t think his work was in circulation until the late 1840s? I’ll attach pictures and tried to get the closest I could while keeping it clear. Also the reverse is slightly rotated as well so that’s pretty neat!
The 3 over 3 looks like this,https://www.usacoinbook.com/coins/764/half-dimes/capped-bust/1836-P/3-over-inverted-3/ and there are two varieties as well the small 5c and the large 5c
It looks like it’s an over date of some sort to me but yea your right it’s not the inverted 3. I wonder if this is one of the varieties due to the rotated die as well
AirborneReams, When you have a coin as this, it is helpful to look up the variety online or in a reference book. Forget about the date and see if the design elements match up. The reverse is usually the best place to start on Bust coinage.
This is an 1836 LM - 5 an R-3 coin obv.3 rev. HH yes it is the inverted 3 large 5 small date The pup rev. Is the recut N in united. Obv. Stars 1,11,&12 recut Here is my 1834 inverted 3 to better understand what your eyes are looking for. Recut N in united. Value 100/$115.usd detailed scratches it would not straight grade.
Possibly is that a know thank you! I do try and look these things up prior to asking but I can never find a good source for varieties I did get one for the large cents from a previous posts but not all the other coins.
It will be listed tomorrow! Hehe oh wow! If I may ask where did you find other things to look for when checking varieties? All I could find were people talking about the inverted 3 but nothing else. I’ve also seen people determining seated half cents if it was a large or small star not by the stars by other things looked for during the mint process.
https://web.archive.org/web/2018040...23-die-pairings-pictures-r-factors--more.html LM 3. R-3 I Collect half dimes.....both cap bust and seated.
I would grade yours a detailed " fine" scratches as a collector I personally wouldn't pay over $50 for your coin I value it at 95/100 due to the variety...and being an R-3. Now if someone is searching for this die marriage they may be willing to pay more.
Newish forum member here. But I'm really interested in the Capped Bust Half Dimes, and I managed to find the Logan/McCloskey (LM) book a few months ago to help me identify the various die marriages and remarriages. Fascinating stuff! OP's picture is of the 1836 LM-5, which is Obverse 3 for that year and Reverse HH. (LM starts each year's obverses with 1, but the reverses have their own names and some of them are used across multiple years). Reverse HH and Rev FF both have small 5Cs - which OP has pictured above. There are repeated 3/inv3 errors in the series: two in 1834 and one in 1836. For 1836, the error occurred on 1836 Obverse 2. 1836 Obverse 2's only Reverse pairing was with Reverse GG and that Rev uses a large 5c stamp. This is LM-3, and it's a Rarity 1 coin although it can be tough to find because it's a variety of interest. But your eyes do NOT deceive you: the LM-5 has this characteristic, to quote the LM book: "Digit 3 recut on outside of lower ball." That little tail on the left of the lower ball of 3, and the small 5 on the reverse with the N in United also also repunched (look at the right upright of that N), are key identifying points for the LM-5 marriage. Also note: there was a link to the "web.archive.org" site. It points to a fantastic reference for CBHD collectors. But it's not perfect - and although the table identifies LM-3 as comprising Obv 2 / Rev GG, if you click on the LM-3 link, the JPG that pulls up mistakenly says "Obv 1 Rev GG." Just adds to the fun, eh?
Paddy, I did just now. (Been only glancing at the forum over Thanksgiving week). Assuming it's OK to post excerpts from the book and not run afoul of copyright (mods - please let me know or DELETE post if my assumption is wrong), I'll share the descriptions of the LM-3 and LM-5 from the book. It doesn't indicate an inverted 3 on the LM-5 but I will acknowledge that there have been a few omissions / typos that I've been made aware of elsewhere in the book. (Overall though - it's an amazingly good reference work so no criticism intended!)
