Details Too Sharp?

I don't own any of these and they are out of my price range anyway...but I do like to look at nice examples on eBay and dream of winning the lottery.

This 1798 dollar looks funny to me. I think it was cleaned at one time which makes the devices stand out more...but the details look just too strong. My first thought was maybe it was tooled just a touch. But, I could be totally wrong.

I would be interested to see if anyone else thinks it looks funny or is it just me.

It looks like a normal fine high grade silver dollar to me.

I can't fathom selling a coin on Ebay at that price . You think a person would sell it at an auction house like HA.com . I've never sold there but they look more high end than Ebay , no ?

Have you looked at their other items for sale? They must have close to $10 million on there. Saving a few percent on seller fees would be a big chunk.

Well struck and high grade. But dipped out the luster looks off as does the color. They passed it as market acceptable but it’s a c example for the grade

IMO it's a way of advertising the coin.
I don't think the lister really expects to sell the coin on eBay.

just a way to advertise their items by putting a coin at a high price they know people will look and then look at what else they have

Costs nothing to list and it’s free advertisement. And I have purchased a few relatively expensive coins on eBay in the past because I could not locate them anywhere else. A 42 Jefferson D over horizontal D in NGC MS66 was the last one.

What goes around comes around, I'm still waiting Dad. Thanks for the post and a pleasant memory.

The "free advertisement" idea doesn't make sense to me. They have almost 300 coins listed for over $50,000. I think they fully intend to sell them using ebay. They're all (or mostly) "best offer", so to me they just want to avoid a real auction or doing the reserve thing.

I agree with @Mainebill. Appears to have had an older dipping and now regaining its tone. A little surprised it didn't get a "detailed" from NGC.

If I were in the market for one of the coins they're showing on eBay, I'd contact them directly to negotiate a price, as would most people, since it's quite obvious from reading the listing how to do this. EBay is effectively extra ad space, where few coins will actually be sold. Their website shows the same coins at 5% back of the eBay price.

The sharpness is all original and quite nice. The questions come with the color, which is not original. If you cracked this coin out of the holder, you might not get a straight grade the next time around.

I didn't read the fine print, so maybe. Posting all these just to end up taking it outside ebay would not please them if they got wind of it. I perceive this seller as more of a consignment kind of thing but who knows. Out of over a thousand coins their cheapest is $1800. Maybe ebay is asleep or there's some other arrangement.

The seller, Rare Coin Wholesalers, is well-known at the major shows. They stock a lot of high priced material. If you get on the email list, they will send you offers on coins every day. I have bought few items from them. This is my favorite, an 1860-D five dollar gold piece. It's graded MS-62. 1860-D $5 O.jpg 1860-D $5 R.jpg

I checked out Rare Coin Wholesalers web site and after I regained my tongue from my esophagus, I found this pattern that I had never even heard of before. BTW, the 1798 dollar that is the subject of this thread is probably the LEAST expensive coin on the site. And I agree that it has not been tooled and maybe had an old cleaning.

RCH deals in high end pricey coins exclusively. They are also well known for playing the crackout game and resubmitting coins repeatedly to get the max grade. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

That is really cool. I’ve never seen that one before.
