Does anyone remember April 13th 1976 ? I went to this tiny post office with my Father, I was 9 1/2 years old. We went there because the main one was to busy. I just remember waiting in line which felt like years had past . The guy put this stamp on my note and then stamped it . That was it . All that time waiting in line. Was it worth it ?
Anyways, I looked at Ebay and got confused .Well that happens lately . So , is this a $5 Note or more perhaps More ? We got the note directly form the Bank by the way . IMG_20201123_034740494_HDR.jpg Fresh as "Buns in the oven " .

4/13/1976 is probably the release date of the "new" 2 dollar notes. your Dad probably got the note from the bank that day and went over to the PO to have it stamped showing that it was a 1st day release. Just like coins that are graded first day of release but this is a note showing that moment in time. The bicentennial was big thing back in 1976 or it seemed it to me. Everyone wanted a 1976 quarter and kept everyone one of them. LOL !!! i wonder if in 2026 the "sestercentennial" will catch on. That is a tough one to say. Snowman

I have one of those too! My grandmother got each of us grandkids one. I still have it in the very same envelope. I remember it as such a big deal that when the Bicentennial actually came...I was tired of hearing about it. It was an awesome time; none-the-less. Now I have to go dig mine out to look at it :)

@Snowman , you are correct on the release date.
@SensibleSal66 , I didn't go to the Post Office that April but I did go on July 4 and had this one stamped with the July 4, 1976 date.

I have one also. I don't think there is any market for them.

The story goes that a little old lady went to the San Francisco FRB the first day that the Bicentennial $2 notes were released, and she bought two for her grandson. She put them in an envelope and stored them away until her grandson was old enough to appreciate them.

Years and years passed, and when she finally gave him the envelope, they were as crisp and fresh as the day they were printed. The young man was surprised to note that the serial numbers were 00000001 and 00000002. After doing a little checking, he realized that they may be worth a little money, so he decided to put them up for sale with one of the major auction houses. When the auctions closed, "1" sold for about $27,000 and "2" sold for about $9,000.

Sure beats a stamp, don't it!

I remember getting two of the notes cancelled on that day. May still have them somewhere.
It was quite a fad item at the time, and a lot of people had them done, but some post offices kept doing them for people with that date stamp long after the actual date, and it kept them from having any significant collector value at that time.

I have one I bought because the Postmark is Tampa.

Funny thing that July 4, we were visiting my Dad and watching the Tall Ships in New York harbor; my Dad mentioned "gee, 200th anniversary and we're probably going to impeach President Nixon during our Bi-Centennial".

Ford completed Nixon's term and lost to Jimmy Carter in 1976.

I think he meant it as a joke since he was NOT a Nixon fan; having known him when we were living in California.

JeffC Go explore something and think a happy thought!

2026 isn't too far off. I think it'd be cool to take the note to the Post Office again at that time and ask for another stamp! 50 years apart!
