Thanks for all the answers and references everyone! Been a great learning experience. I like the coin roll hunting comment that’s a great idea.
Coin Roll hunting is fun and inexpensive. Yesterday I bought 10 rolls of quarters from my bank, I found a 2020 W quarter and a silver 1962 quarter. There were also a lot of 2020 quarters which I didn't keep since I have all I need/ want. anyway I rolled them back up and took them back to the bank and deposited them. So I was able to add 2 valuable quarters to my collection for face value. The stuff you find may not always be in the best condition, but good finds are out there.
Before the pandemic, I bought most of my coins at the major shows, like FUN and Baltimore. Now that my travel is restricted (I am an “old coot” who is part of the higher risk pool), I am doing all of my shopping on-line. I have further sharpened my skills with interpreting Internet photos, and I deal with people I know well, or the better known dealers. I don’t get many bargains these days, but at least it makes staying home most of the more bearable. I buy some coins from the big auction houses. I even got one of the Heritage “make an offer to the owner” deals to work, but I prefer buying from fixed price lists. Some of the auctions are brutal. Some people have the idea that they are “protected” by the fact that others are bidding. Believe me, they aren’t.
Ebay, Aydin Coins, Charter Oak Coins (auction) for me so far. Like others say, it depends what you're looking for - I'm collecting older, lower grade silver quarters mostly - and half dollars.
Local Coin Shops & Coin Shows I try to avoid antique stores, estate sales, and estate auctions for coins since these venues are overpriced.
Most antique stores are overpriced but you would be amazed at some of the great coins and low prices I've found in them. You never know unless you try.
Antique auctions. (The true estate find coins not the dreck you usually see) coin shows. Heritage StacksBowers some local numismatic auctions. GC Other dealers. Antique dealers as they know I buy coins . And various other sources. Not sleaze bay though
My impression of antique shops as sources for coins is that they are overpriced about 98% of the time. The other 2% are spot-on with a minuscule amount for “cherry pick” because they don’t know what they have. Some of them are not concerned about authenticity. I once spotted a counterfeit Pillar Dollar that one had for sale. It was in a case, I could spot it from a foot away. They had no interest in withdrawing it from sale.
