How Many U.S. Collections & Others Have You Completed?

I have been thinking about upgrading some of my sets. But, that would be like letting my children go. The vast majority were found in circulation by being very diligent every day. And, some of my albums are from the 40's. Worn and covered in tape. I just can't do it. See my IHC Whitman for example. I started it in 1948.

Ha! Reminds me of the ball cap I bought when I bought my new 1990 Ford Ranger. I had Ranger attached to the top and still wear it every day for 30 years now. It's an old friend.

 

I would like to have one B.U. example in both Barber albums just to show the beauty of each compared to my well worn examples. A MS 60 of each would suffice.

All are NGC grades 63-65, except the Raw 1947 restrike. (I have 2 of the one year type 1943 being it has the lowest mintage)

Yes, I forgot about Canada. I did a complete set of Bank of Upper Canada One Penny and Half Penny. It was difficult, but doable. I gave it to my oldest son a while back. He is now trying to see if there are any variations that I may have missed. I don't think so, but, perhaps.

 

Ikes, susan Bs, peace dollars, Franklins, a dansco 7070 type set, a date set of bust halves minus the 1815/2. Working on walking liberty halves and mercury dimes right now, and large cents in the background. I had a set of silver eagles, but sold it in 2008 after my divorce.

H'mm, I have completed or nearly completed:

- Lincoln cents except for certain errors/varieties like the double-dies and wide AM, none of which I am pursuing. This is a circulated set except for those available only in proof.
- Half cents from 1849 through 1857 in AU-53 through AU-58.
- Walking Liberty Proofs, 1936 through 1942, avg. grade 65.3, range 63 to 67.
- IHCs just missing 70, 72, and 77. Most are in MS grades although about 5 are awaiting upgrades from F, EF, and AU grades. This collection will be probably be completed in 2021.
- I am working on a Red Book type set (with modifications which are additions) from Colonial through current date and including some gold. Only business strike coins or proofs of business strike coins. This collection will never be complete but I would say it is about 80% complete. Grades range from F-12 to Proof 65.
- Circulated Mercury Dimes except '16-D. Just cannot bring myself to pay the inflated price for over-graded coins.

 

I have several that are still works in progress (re: may never be finished!)
But here are the ones I have finished.

Sacajawea/Native American Dollars: 2005 - 2012
Presidential Dollars: 2007 - 2016
Kennedy Halves: 1964 - 2003 (the 2004 - 2021 book is still a work in progress)
State Quarters: 1999 - 2009 (National Parks book just needs this year to be finished and 2021)
Roosevelt Dimes: 1946 - 1964
Jefferson Nickels: 1938 - 1961
Lincoln Cents: 1940 - 1958 (even though I have incorporated it into a book that goes from 1909 - 1958)
Doesn't seem like much compared to some of the other sets, but its been fun accumulating them for the last 52 years!!

 

I know that we as coin collectors put these sets together to satisfy ourselves. And that is as it should be.... Does it bother anyone else to know that book will be disassembled if you find you need to sell it to a dealer? I know my dealer spends most of his workday taking coins out of books and I would assume that other dealers are the same. I get it. Collectors want to assemble their own books. Does it bother you to know your sets will be disassembled when you part with it?

 

I just finished my Standing Liberty Quarter collection this week - unexpectedly, I sent in what I believed was probably a 1917 type 1 with some other SLQs to ICG for economy grading, I had some slight hope it was a 1916 but I'd found it in an eBay silver quarter lot that cost me less than $4.70 per quarter in early October, so I figured other smarter more experienced folks had already looked at it, but I sent it in anyway - and voila! I have a 1916 FR02 details, damaged 1916 and that's the last piece of the puzzle. Funny I paid about $500 (most in the set) for a VF30 details 1923 S the week before for what I thought was going to be the last piece of the puzzle. I didn't think I'd get a 1916. At least not for a year or two if I saved up and saw a good opportunity. Next up! A Capped Bust quarter set!

It's is ok not to have every coin in a set. Having a focus/goal in coin collecting is good. The is no certain way to collect coins. The main thing is having fun/enjoying learning about them historically and the art aesthetics of the coins.

 

Wow! What an impressive set. You are rich . That's a lot of gold ($30,000+) ? Are these coins not bigger than an ounce ?

Yes, it does, kinda sorta. That notion occurred to me years ago (when I read about Buddy Ebsen's collection being auctioned) - that we spend years, a lifetime sometimes, building our collections. Then it's taken apart, and sold in pieces to a bunch of other folks doing the same thing. Rinse, repeat.

But then I figure the fun for most of us is the thrill of the hunt, so in that regard we're just facilitating folks like us in the future. Or something like that

 

Never completed a set in my life. Trying to do trade dollars with proofs other than 84 and 85, though and a complete type set but not been doing so well though. I do have a complete set of walkers but I bought them that way
