    Folks,

I've been diligently searching for a good reliable source for XL DIY slabs to protect and present a number of larger exonumia and medals that I have acquired. Finding anything within the US was a total exercise in futility, so I turned to the "Den of Thieves" merchant, Alibaba.

The biggest issue I have with this site is the exceedingly long lead times between order and receipt. It averages around 30 days. It's been a looooooooong while since I've contemplated ordering from China, so my "test order" was for less than a dozen of these oversize slabs. (Finding products on that site is also less than "user friendly." Let me know if you are interested and I can post up a link to this specific product.)

As expected, delivery took exactly 30 days, but I couldn't be more pleased with the products. I now have a self-slab option for my large religious and oversize Dan Carr pieces. They even accommodate odd shaped items like the 2018 KOTCT 2 oz. Silver Cob.

    Thought I would share.

    Hey @dwhiz , whaddaya think?

These can be ordered to accommodate objects from 41mm all the way up to 60mm. I have a 60mm medal on route to me. I will post it up when it arrives.

These accommodate even the thick 2 ounce and 3 ounce Daniel Carr KOTCT medals without a problem. I was thinking those would be living in plastic flips forever.

    Enjoy.

This photo has one medal in a "normal" sized self-slab for size comparision. The little guy is the same size as your typical NGC slab.

The item on the upper right isn't one of the new ones I ordered. It is an older PCCB that I received from an "esteemed member" of this site. It's there for comparison as well.

    What about pricing?

So, I assume that slabs larger than 60mm are not available.

Can you specify what information is to be included on the insert to include the designer and the mintmark?

I didn't look for anything larger than 60mm, but I will try to see what I can find.

I used and Excel spreadsheet to layout labels for these and printed them to a full sheet shipping label (sticky back). It's fairly easy to format each label to size using Excel. I just cut them out after printing.

As the labels are also DIY, you can include whatever information / photos you want. Heck, put a photo of your dog on them. I just liked the graphics I chose, and may change them again in the future. I scale them to fit within Excel. Pretty easy actually.

Pricing? For the initial small order, these averaged around $3.40 each, delivered. I only ordered ten (10) in my initial purchase. Shipping gets cheaper when you order larger quantities of items.

The first order, shipping was $8.00 or about 80 cents per slab unit.

My second order was for ten more large slabs, and 70 regular sized slabs. Shipping was $15.50 for that order or about 20 cents per slab unit.

I would be interested in links to these. I have medals in the size range you show plus ones that far exceed the size so I would really be interested in larger ones.

I have many medals that are 70-90mm. So, what you are saying is that this company provides just the slab with the pronged holder and you put them together yourself. I assume that you also have to give them the thickness of the medal.

    Thanks!

    There you go.

I ordered the 10 piece lot and put the sizes I wanted in a "notes" field to the seller. That's the most economical way to buy them.

Yeah, I buy them empty, insert my exonumia, and print the labels.

It's a "self-slab" DIY project, primarily for safe storage and display.

It would be one heck of a DIY project for me. I have more than 500 medals.

I know, it gets addicting. What I like is the ability to blend safekeeping and presentation in a pretty cost effective package.

One other note, these large size slabs fit well in the storage boxes I have, as long as you insert them sideways. Their width is almost exactly the same dimension as the height of a standard NGC style slab.
