2014 d dime with partial missing TY in liberty. What causes this? I am sure someone has asked this a thousand times so forgive the monotony of the question and Thanks for the help.
The area to the TY in LIBERTY appears to be raised compared to the rest of the field... Don't know what it is but appears to be more than defdam.... IMO. ~Rob
Almost like a pre-cud that has removed a portion of the die leaving the TY portion shallow... Or something like that.
If you look at image 1 you can see the coin has been flattened above TAT and below ONE, this has caused the bulges you see on the obverse, IMO
Expat... I see it... the "raised" area is to the top of the obverse, so would be opposite at the bottom of the reverse in the area of ONE. That looks like it took a hit or something. So this caused the "bulge" to the obverse? Indeed, I see it. ~Rob
Looks like after this dime left the mint the rim was bent and then hammered back to shape. The missing letters were pounded out when the coin was hammered back into shape. I know from when we were kids and shot dimes with bb guns. The bb's would bend the coin at the impact area and then we would set the dime on a flat surface and pound the bend out. Where the impact area was pounded back, whatever part of the coins features were there would look pretty much like what the "T" and the "Y" on this dime looks like. The dime also looks to have been sandblasted and/or exposed to some type of chemical. I'm leaning towards sandblasted, as I did that to a coin, or two when I was a kid and had access to a sandblaster.
It's been damaged and it may have been struck through grease first but that's very common. It's a spender. Welcome to CT.
