image.jpg As you know I am new and reached out before and came across what it looks to be a 1971D Kennedy half. Is it real ?

Well, your coin had a mintage slightly above 302,000,000 coins. I don't see why it would be fake, not to mention it is only worth face value.

I have a 1971-D JFK in my pocket right now! When I get rolls at the bank, I keep what I want and spend the rest. I figure maybe it will get someone interested in collecting, and with the coin shortage, some store clerks actually like it. I usually carry a couple of dollars worth of JFKs on me.

It looks real to me but it's a common date coin.

I guess what I meant is how do you tell them from the silver D .

A mintage of 302 Million is pretty much as common as it gets. Is there some reason you think it might be something special?

CoinCorgi Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit!

Both the date and the mint mark are how you tell.

Half dollars made in 1970 and before are silver.

Then why does ngc show a 1971 D struck in 40% silver on a planchet or clad srike.

That'd be an error coin and you'd have to weigh it and/or check the edge for signs of the copper core.

I've got to stop doing this to myself.

Would copper mean just a normal coin?

It looks like half silver and half copper.

Half copper half nickel means not silver. Post the link to the ngc info you referenced. We don't need more pictures of your coin.

Yes, copper clad is normal for a a 1971 half dollar. The typical "sandwich" type coin with copper in between two silver-colored copper nickel outsides.

Before 1971, half-dollars were 40% silver. But at least one 1971-D half has been identified that was erroneously struck on an old 40% silver blank. Yours probably isn't one.

Here's an article that does a good job explaining it.
