Hi I'm new to Russian Imperial coin collecting and i'm finding it difficult to get a good book on the subject. There are a lot of novadels/restrikes out there, which are easy to spot with UK coins, but difficult for me with the less familiar Russian coins. How can i tell a novadel from a genuine coin? This Anna Ioanovna ruble below, for example - is it a novadel or real?
I'm no expert on Imperial Russian coins by any means, but I'd be rather suspicious about the authenticity of this particular coin. The details look rather crude when compared with contemporary examples on Numista. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces26968.html
Thanks for the link, Bradley. I'm still trying to get a sense of the look and feel of genuine coins before i commit money to them. I may stick to the full service dealers who vouch for the authenticity of their coins.
..idk bout yours, but i bought this one for 3 bucks from China....i'd be leery at best...they make good copies, complete with legend on the edge...
Not an expert on that era of Russian coins but that coin does not look right. The obverse looks weird especially compared to authentic examples, the details are grainy and the denticles just stop halfway.
Thanks for the opinions guys. Consensus is that it's not genuine. I need to do more study on this subject.
Novodel is essentially a restrike but some modifications are allowed. This is neither. It's just a replica. I wouldn't pay a single cent for it.
There's no "a" in "novodel". Based on the appearance, I agree that this one doesn't look right, though like the other respondents, my experience with 18th century Russian silver is very limited at best.
It is 100% fake Siberian man!!! Coins were not very circular back then. Poor details and look at the eyes of the Empress! Looks sad!!!
All the weight proves is that it’s made from the right metal. I’ll take your advice and condemn it as fake. I don’t know Russian coins well yet. Do you know any good books?
