Bought this coin for about $20 thinking it could be an N-3 51/81. Sent it to Bob Grellman who said N-3 die stat B late. VF-25 grade. Would you say it would grade slightly higher at a TPG? VF-30 or 35? Pics are not the greatest,
used verdicare to remove green spots. worked pretty well. Big price difference between vf and xf for this coin.
I don't think that it will get a higher grade from the TPGs, if it gets a grade at all. There are a couple of green spots that might lift. The late die state makes this coin look more worn than it is. For that reason, I would be quite surprised if the TPGs gave it more than a VF-25..
Thanks for your replies. These pics are not flattering at all to how the coin looked in hand. Grellman thought tpg 30 to 35 grade reasonable
It might get a 30 or 35 from a TPG, but I seriously doubt it would get anything higher than that. Better pictures would help us be more definitive.
As I understand it, EAC first grades a coin by normal methods (essentially ANA standards), then they start taking into account problems that the ANA standards don't.
yes I think they start with the detail or sharpness grade and then deduct for flaws. I think they are stricter on both.
IMO a VF 30 but don't think it would make 35. Opinion based on PCGS photograde. I've noticed more than a few times they've graded coins higher than what their own photograde shows.
