That's umm , truly amazing . I can imagine what it looks like in hand . Wait, how does gold tone anyways ?
.9999 gold usually does not tone, but most gold has some other stuff in it that will tone under the right conditions. There's not much of it out there though.
Coinage gold usually contains some copper. I assume it is the copper that tones. Ever see someone mention "copper spots"
SPECIFICATIONS Composition: Gold Fineness: 0.9170 it's comparable in composition to the American eagle, but perhaps it's different on the filler metal mix and has more copper than silver but I'm doubting that also it's probably roughly the same, America didn't invent the composition. it is 1855, so it's been around a while to tone up given the right conditions. Also gold oxide exists even from pure gold samples, (Au2O3) , so gold oxidizing/tarnishing must exist also. interestingly enough gold oxide is roughly that toning color also. sort of an orange that goes to red to red/brown, but not brown. it's a beauty though!
Nice find! You still on the bay selling quarter eagles? I've bought from you in the past, not buying right now with prices so high, just haven't run across you for awhile!
My buying and selling has really slowed down since the pandemic, but I still sell a few here and there. I’ve been listing more on the pcgs board to avoid eBay fees too.
