Dr Coinlove; or how I learned to stop worrying and built a coin cabinet

I'll start with a necessary, I blame @Clavdivs for this. Thanks to his extremely fascinating:wideyed:and fun:woot: thread from a year and a half ago, https://www.cointalk.com/threads/old-homemade-coin-cabinet-with-potential.336310/, I had been laying plans:writer: on making my own coin cabinet for a long while.
Then, by chance, I came across these coin holders for sale (I'd been leery of making my own as this is something he'd cited as the biggest pain in the process) and I won them for far under my bid:smuggrin::

(Enough spots for just under 1,000 coins!... anyone have 1,000 ancients to spare:troll:?)

But where were these trays gonna go???
Leave that up to having a savvy and frugal wife:kiss:
She is great at checking local listings for bargains and found a beautiful fixer upper for me that's drawers were the exact size I would need:singing:
    20200925_170223.jpg

As for the trays, I couldn't very well leave them that awkward ply wood color. So, off to the store I went. I knew black would compliment the coins best. But I didn't want them glossy either as that could distract the eye.
I found a perfect satin black color and began painting...
Once done, I began gluing the felt circles I'd ordered online, into their new homes:
    20201003_124658.jpg

Then it was time to carefully:nailbiting: drill the holes in the sides of the drawers for the tray holding pegs to go into:
    20200927_152637.jpg

After a quick trip to the hospital to get the drillbit out of my good knee:inpain: I kid, I kid. I made sure to drill it into my bad knee:p:joyful:
And success! It fit perfectly to have a top tray scooted to the back while the lower tray was at the front in each drawer:
    20201003_141024.jpg

Now, what to do about all the dings and places where the cabinets wood had warped or pulled apart.
    20201016_162800.jpg

Enter old English, his minwax friends and some good old fashioned elbow Greeks (little tiny Greeks jumped out of my elbows and did the work for me;)):
    20201019_150822.jpg
So, what lays in the drawers now?
    The+unbroken+seal+on+King+Tut's+tomb+big.jpg
    ... wonderful things:D

    20201019_150505.jpg 20201113_153142.jpg
    But the work continues...
Not that there's anything wrong with the lovely old timey nobs on there now. But after seeing @Clavdivs coin nobs, rest assured when I find what I'm looking for and they're installed I'll send an update.

Thanks a bunch if you made it through my journey:)
I'd love to see where and how you store your coins that aren't locked up at the bank, other coin/ curiosity:pompous: cabinets, hear ideas you might have to improve mine or anything that comes to mind!

It's beautiful! I could never accomplish a project like that; I have enough problems assembling Ikea-type furniture. How do you view the lower tray in each drawer? By lifting out the upper tray?

That's incredibly impressive. I would have to assemble it at a hospital because of how many fingers I'd accidentally slice open trying to get the drill out of its holder, let alone actually constructing the cabinet itself!

    Excellent!

Suggestion: Construct a soft, even light box/panel over the top that rests entirely on the raised sides and back so you do not have to have that table lamp. Then the top is free so you can sit a try up there for easy access solving Donna's question. If you were sparing with the glue on the felt, you might want to place one tray upside down and use the smaller holes for super small coins.

I do have at least a thousand coins I do not need but not need and beready to send them off to new homes is a different matter.

Exactly! Of course, early on I had visions of finding some kind of pulley mechanism, ala DeNiro's hidden up his sleeve gun in Taxi driver. But unable to find anything, aaand lacking a young Deniro like ability to create, I settled for simply lifting:

Was it just by chance that you bought 14 trays and the cabinet has seven drawers, so two trays per drawer nicely fills the cabinet?

    @Ryro - that looks fantastic!!!
You really DO NOT KNOW how jealous I am that you found those coin holders!! I think I still have some sort of combination carpal tunnel/PTSD from that whole/hole process. If I was to do it again... well I would not do it again.

I love the starting piece of furniture too - looks perfect for the job.

Keep us updated with more pics... it really looks fantastic.
I am glad at least one person has learned from my mistakes!! :woot:

Your wife bought you coin furniture!? She is a keeper my friend. :woot::cigar::D

That looks fantastic. I love the old school feel of a solid wood coin cabinet and you did a great job on this one. It is a fitting home for the @Ryro Collection!

Good job Ryro, now its a real coin cabinet.

I didn't make any changes to my cabinet, just put the most famous spanish bust on top.
inside is a mix of wooden coin cases.

What would the best material to make a light box use be?
And innovative idea:pompous: for my tiny coins.
I think I might just do that:)
I have a special spot for the large coins I keep in my study/ office/ man cave 20201113_165414.jpg
As you can see my friend, I have some of my spots filled. But if you ever feel the need to unburden yourself of any Pertinax, Septy, Pescennius Niger et all;) I have a wonderful plush seat awaiting their imperial(ish) reverses:troll::troll::troll:

A great cabinet. It feels much nicer when you make the modifications yourself. I would make one for myself, however the likelihood of it looking as nice as this would be slim.

Awesome job @Ryro that is a great job building your coin cabinet. I look forward to seeing it progress in future posts. I would love to have a coin cabinet some time down the road. It would be a great alternative to my coin boxes tucked in a book shelf.

Actually I have a couple leftover. Dumb luck that I had enough though. As, I did buy the trays first:wacky:

Great thread (I love reading your threads by the way, really funny), and what an amazing cabinet! Congratulations! That must have been fun too, thinking how it could look like and then creating it.
