Hi I have a French coin - seems to be in Aluminium - see images. Would appreciate feedback on this. Regards Thomas
2 versions 1 Aluminum and 1 aluminum bronze. # 82 and 82a.1 16,684,000 over both I believe. Aluminum bronze more valuable as far as I can tell.
Hello, Your coin is aluminium. 1941 had no other mint than Paris (so no B or C mintmark for 1941). Common coin, but high grades are rare as Aluminium is quite a fragile metal. Mintage as stated by TheNoost, including both Al and AlBronze. Q
I have a 5, some 2's and several 1s, most of which are in really good condition...Cucumbor, when you say high grader are rare... how rare please. What would they be worth in Fine condition? Best wishes, Mike.
Not that rare, Mike The book "le Franc VII", in addition to a cotation book, also gives the Highest grade every single coin has been seen or is recorded. For the 1941 2 francs we are talking about, the highest recorded specimen is a SUP58, but only worth 24 euro (you will not buy your Mecedes this time ) Q
Appreciate the reply and was not expecting a fortune but nice to know they have some value.... I thought they were almost worthless. Best wishes, Mike.
Many countries were not minting coins in 1941 due to the war, however I think what tholath there is pretty common as I see coins like that in discount boxes at coin shops and shows.
As an aside, when travelling in student days, I visited Paris in 1972. These old Vichy 1 and 2 franc coins were sometimes used as centimes to make change. One shop had galvanized buckets full of them under the counter. By then 1 centime was so small an amount that new 1 c coins were seldom seen, and most stores declined to gve change, but just rounded up the prices (very French of them, but some US stores were doing the same).
celticoin is right. As a child in the sixties, I was used to them as pocket change. It was quite confusing : we had 1 franc coins worth 1 franc and 1 franc coins worth 1 cent...:headbang:
