Being out of town, I didn't have much to do last night, so I turned on Jimmy Gersteln of the TV show Treasure Hunter.

He advertised a 2 peso Uncirulated Mexican Gold Coin (1945) of 22 K at
    .0482 Oz. for $ 75.00 each. If gold is over $ 800.00 Oz. How is this possible ? Shouldn't the 1/2 Oz be about $ 400.00 ?

    A little math error there.

    .0482 Oz doesn't = 1/2 oz., it is closer to 1/20th oz.

$75 for $44(927.10 * .0482) worth of gold doesn't sound like a good deal to me...

    1/2 = 0.5
    1/20 = 0.05.

    Decimal places do count.

Ole Jimmy can sure talk, he tell them 40% items are solid silver, and the gold he hawks is the rarest in the land, round some these parts they may refer to him as Lying Jimmy, and the way you know he's lying is his lips are moving, ah but alas just be observant of what you buy cause the cost is high!!!!!!!!

My gold buying has STOPPED. Ground to a halt. Skidded to a stop. Hit a brick wall. Fallen off a cliff. Bashed into a moving train. Gone plopppp.

    You get the idea.

And is it my imagination or have dealer premiums also skyrocketed and stayed constantly massive? I'm seeing $50.00 over spot fairly consistently.

Scrap gold is a good idea if you're looking to invest in smaller amounts of gold.

I've been lucky enough to find an 18k bracelet, and 10k gold band on the sidewalk on two separate occasions. Between the two, I have 0.126 ounces of pure gold, worth $116 as I'm writing this post.

I guess I was blind sided by the glint of gold dust. I should have known that
.0482 is not even close to .50.

Thanks guys, I'm glad I didn't rush into buying from Jimmy. Just out of curiousity, if I went to Mexico, would anyone have an idea how much 2 peso gold would cost from a Mexican bank ?

Do not buy gold in Mexico, it is more expensive there than it is here for some crazy reason - taxes for one thing, and then just higher demand for them. You can find these coins on fleaBay for about $55 or so - a reasonable price considering it has $45 worth of gold. I sure wouldn't pay $90 for them.

Way too much at $75. I just got this for $50. Haze and scratches are from the plastic slab, graded MS-63
