I ran across this coin yesterday and was amazed at the damage to it I am curious as to what could have caused this. Anyone have any ideas?

    I agree: thermal damage.

Someone may have taken a torch to it.

its done on a type of wire wheel

you can see where it was held in something like a vise or with pliers on the postions of "AMERICA" on the reverse and to the right & above the date on the observe when it was flipped over. these areas have little or no contact with the wire wheel

my son had done this before while holding a penny with pliers and putting it up to a counter top wire wheel in our shop. safety glasses are a must !!!

Lincoln Cent abusers should be banned,

This is an abused coin - there should be a law to lock up these "Lincoln Cent abusers".

All kidding aside - I found a 1954-S just like this last month and it looked to be AU to Mint state before they abused it. So strange, I was thinking acid, heat or some shameful type of whizzing.
