I just picked up my first gold coin and wanted to share. It's an 1882 Half Eagle, a very common date, but I managed to get a great price on it. I won it via Marshall Field's bi-weekly coin auction -- I was the only bidder on it at $140.

I also picked up a nice BU 1883 "no cents" nickel, BU 1913-D Type I Buffalo nickel, and an 1868 2 cent piece in VF/EF.

Very nice...now that you have gold, you WILL want more. You just started the "launch sequence" to wanting, buying and collecting gold!

    Congrats man!
I just bought my first "real" gold coin a month or so ago... a nice, shiny 1924 saint...

I looked at dozens of them... and then there she was, and she talked to me... its really friggin weird but i swear to god... It said "I am the one you are looking for, buy me"

I thought it was a freak occurrence, and that maybe I should stop buying coins ( maybe i was going insane ) but it turns out OTHER people have had the same reaction to certain coins, not TYPES of coins but specific coins, I guess it could be explained by "supreme eye appeal" ;)

I grabbed a 2005 panda (my avatar) to stick in a box of 2005 coins for our baby due later this year.

    Then I found a 1905 S 5.00 for a good price...

    Next I'll need something from 1805 :)

figure I'll give them to the kid someday (this is from when you were born, this one is from 100yrs before you were born...etc)

That does seem like a good price you got on that 1882

No photo yet. I'd grade it at right around AU-50.

What is Marshall Field's bi-weekly coin auction? It sounds promising.

I only own five gold coins. The first I ever purchased was a 1900 five dollar gold piece. BU, for about $20. That was in 1964. Could have bought the Indian version for the same amount, but was a college student and money didn't come easy.

Anyway, love my gold coins. Wish I had more.

    :) :)

    Hey Gary--
I know a guy that bought gold coins at that price too...He worked some in Mexico when he was in a army and could get sets of US gold coins (this was around 1933) for just over face...he got some back in the US!

Congratulations Palindrome! I just got my first old gold coin this past weekend as well. I have a 1986 $5 AGE, but this was my first old one. I purchased an 1880 S $5 Liberty graded NGC AU58. I got it for $200 and was happy with that price. I feel that it was a good deal for a very nice looking coin. Next, I'm looking for a $10 Liberty. My plan is to try to put together an 1800's Liberty gold type set. I figure I'll try to get the $1, 2.5, 5, 10 and 20. Then, if I can afford it, I'll get a $3. We'll see how it goes. So far, I'm very happy with the $5 though. Happy Collecting! :)

Marshall Field's is an old school department store in downtown Chicago (also a chain). The downtown store has a coin and stamp department in the lower level. Every couple of weeks, they have an auction with about 500 items to bid on.

About 80% of it is US coins and currency with the other 20% being foreign. About 20% of the coins are slabbed. The coins are on display for the duration of the auction (usually about two weeks) -- you can go in at any point during business hours to check them out. Bids are collected in a three-ring binder, and bidding is incremented in 5% segments. You can also make a blind bid if you like. On the night the auction closes, there is usually a few people there and they then do live bidding.

The guy who does the grading tends to be a bit happy with the grades, so many times an EF is actually a VF and so on. However, there are still good deals to be had (as in the case of my half eagle) as long as you are comfortable with the grade and know what the coin usually goes for.

I've picked up a fair amount of coins there since I found out about it.

If anyone is interested, let me know and I'll post the phone number here so you can request a bidder ID and give them your mailing address so they can send the price and description sheet for each auction to you.

Speedy, unfortunately I don't have a picture of new coin. That's a great looking coin you've got there yourself. That's almost exactly what I'm looking for...just a nice example of a common date $10 Lib to get the collection going. I was looking for one this past weekend at the Central States Numis. show in St. Louis, but didn't happen to find anything that I liked well enough and fit my budget. There sure was a lot of gold there though! I probably could have found something if I would have looked longer, but it was almost overwhelming!

Sorry but its not for sale ;--)

If I were you and I found a gold coin at a show I liked I would come right out and ask if he would go down any--I asked a few dealers at the last show I went too and most of the time they did...but we wen't talking about gold there!!!
