My bank is strange...

I decided to ask if I could get certain items today. I mentioned silver certificates, $2 bills and star notes. I also mentioned coins, but I digress.

The head teller told me she would have to call the "place where we order our money from" about the bills because my bank does not sell any bills back out! What?! That's right, they will not sell me a silver certificate for face value, or any value for that matter. That can't be right....

In any event, she seemed surprised when her "distribution agent" told her that I would need to go to a coin collector for the silver certificates because they are no longer in circulation.

I guess I'm just a little disappointed. Anyone else come across something similar or is it just my bank?

Banks usually don't keep old coins in stock. I know of Bank Tellers who come across old silver dollars at work that buy them.

What I have found is that you can offer your teller a 10% reward for some notes of choice and that usually gets their attention!!

A 10% reward wouldn't be a bad idea! I guess I'll have to try to make nice with a couple of tellers.

On a positive note, I have a source at work who is keeping an eye out for me. He sets up all of the tills every morning, five days a week. It seems like a promising start!

1 bank i visited only offered to keep older notes like that for a 2-for-1 deal. She said she knew what the items were worth lol

so if you can get the teller to work with you for a 10% reward... take it!! :D

the important thing, though, IS to reward the tellers who find you stuff! It does keep them interested in looking for you.

I have never had that problem with my bank (actually credit union). Most of the time when I go in there, they will tell me they came accross certain items and ask me if I want them.

Not to long ago they offered me 2600 in two dollar bills, all uncirculated still in the original fed binders. Only thing was they were all 2003A bills, so passed on them.

Thanks for the replies! I will definitely try to set up something as best I can. I recall seeing someone who brought their favorite tellers cookies once in awhile, just as a gesture of friendship. I like that!

As for everything else, wow. I think it's a bit humorous that a 2-1 is based on knowing what things are worth. Being offered $2600 worth of the same $2 bill sounds a bit painful, not to mention way out of my league. I can't believe they had them just sitting there in such a large quantity, but perhaps that has a lot to do with the fact that I'm still so new to collecting.

In any event, thanks again for the replies! Everyone's input is both encouraging and extremely helpful in my learning process. Thank you all.

Maybe the tellers in several of my banks think I am cute or something, because they do go out of their way to find good stuff for me.

well from my experience as a bank teller. silver certs and some of those other notes you mentioned are hard to come by. there is no way for us to order them. what we get from customers is what we have. if you get a teller you can become friends with you could always ask them to put anything aside they see. as far as exchanging the notes to customers i would have to give them a straight up deal. i would be fired in a heartbeat if i was found out to be selling bills from my drawer for a premium to customers around the bank. i mean i can take notes home that i want as long as i replace them with the same amount of money. i have some really nice bills put aside for myself and also for others. i just dont have the extra $$ to pick up notes that i dont need. all my money goes towards the chicago collection. i did find a 1950 A $100 Boston FRN star. it is in VF i know it books for about $250 in that condition. so i might put it on ebay. if there is anything you would like i can keep my eye out for you. gl with your local bank

Ditto with urbanchemist. I have only come across one sc in circulation in about a year and a half working at my bank...And I would definately be out of a job if I tried to make money selling bills to customers, lol! On the other hand there are still a lot of neat small face FRN's from the 50's though the 90's that pop up quite often, and every once in a while some of the older series. In any case, happy hunting! :thumb:
