I have'nt seen that designation on NGC or PCGS slabs, do they exist on those slabs? I'm curious because it seems to severely affect the ending price of the coin. In reality though, it is still a 1909-s vdb, right? Is it just die wear that causes the vdb to be weak? Wouldn't it cross into an NGC or PCGS slab as a 09-s vdb? If this is true, it would seem strange to me for the seller to keep it in an ANACS slab with a "weak vdb", if it would not have that designation in a higher tier NGC or PCGS slab. I'm making a lot of assumptions here, but hopefully someone can fill me in with the facts. What really is the point of calling it a "weak vdb"? thanks.
it only comes 2 ways as far as I know, so its either a 1909-s, or a 1909-s vdb. weak or not its a vbd.
I remember seeing something about those before (on eBay), but I just took them at their word. I can see the VDB, so I see not reason it would not cross, but at what grade? Ask yourself why someone (fairly recently) sent that to ANACS in stead of PCGS or NGC. That could have cost them a couple hundred. Maybe they know something we don't?
Weak VDB? It's because the coin is worn. It's a VDB or not a VDB, it's not like you can be a little bit pregnant.
That coin looks quite worn. The obverse 09 seems very worn. So, it struck me as odd that the "S" looks pretty strong. Could this be a 1909 vdb with an added S that got by ANACS? Doesn't seem likely as they are quite good at authenticating genuine coins...but mistakes do happen. Bruce
Weak VDB's do exsist, I have seen them raw and ANACS slabbed. I will not pretend to know about them , and I have avoided the ones I have seen at all costs. I have zero idea as to value. Never seen a WEAK VDB in a NGC or PCGS slab, only ANACS
Maybe the "weak vdb" label is ANACS way of giving you a hint that even though they graded it VG8, if you try to cross it it will come back G6 or G4.
Yeah, the few I've seen seem to sell for considerably lower than an equally graded counterpart. It would definitely be a turn-off if I was considering purchasing, but I just don't see the point in attributing it as such. I don't see other coins that have weak details in certain areas attributed as "weak United", or "Weak shield". I would prefer to have the coin graded and authenticated and let the remaining details speak for themselves. Even if this coin only crossed at a G-6 with NGC with no vdb comment, I'm willing to bet that it would sell for considerably more. I don't know, just my opinion.
