Can anyone tell me what the Official Red Book prices were for the 1694 Carolina Elephant Token - the O punched over the E variety in 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005? Thanks in advance for any help!
Thanks! It's a little help, but it appears as though this coin is increasing at an incredible rate. Especially compared to other rare U.S. coins. And I wanted to confirm my suspicions. I think it's increasing at about 17% each year. In 2006 it was $15,000 in XF. In 2009 its $22,000 in XF. $7,000 in three years seems like a tremendous jump. I seem to remember the coin was around $2,000 in XF in the early 90's.
The only Red Book I have is 1993, $5,500 in VF. That is the highest condition it is listed in. I really don't know where they get the pricing for a rare coin like this, they don't change hands often enough to really get a realistic price.
The majority of Carolina Elephant Tokens are old counterfeits. Even Notre Dame ended up with one: http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/ColCoinText/ElephantTokens.html So I'd recommend being careful buying one and if you have one, I'd have it authenticated. Ribbit
Any rare coin should be authenticated. That goes without saying. I've seen authentic coins that looked fine to me, but later found out that had been cleaned or artifically toned when authenticated.
BTW - Welcome to CoinTalk! :hail: It's nice to see another member interested in colonial issues. :thumb: Ribbit
Del: From 1985 to 2000 the highest grade listed was VF. FYI, see below: 1985 VF= $2500 1990 VF = $4500 1995 VF = $5500 2000 VF = $6000 2005 VF= $8000, XF = $13500 I hope that this helps. And Welcome to the forum. Frank
Barring finding someone with a complete Red Book collection, you might do better contacting Guide Book editor Kenneth Bressett directly. A fine gentleman. Good luck! Best Regards, George ============== VDB Coins
