they chose not to put mine in the edge view holder... they still put coins in the older style holder... they use their discretion... not all coins that NGC does these days go in the edge view holders.

I still disagree with the grade though. I can't see it more than a MS64. The strike is sooo wonderful though. I love that coin.

Maybe its the quality of the pic but I think there are too many marks to qualify it as a 66. I do like the luster and strike of it though.

That is a MONSTER of a strike for a New Orleans Morgan, even if the 84-O can be found well struck, that's just a gem, well done!

I also think you were given a notch up by NGC - there are just too many field issues plus the scratch over the "84" is very distracting. In my collection I would grade this a 65 .. 64 is a little overdoing it.

I commend you for hunting and finding a FULL strike coin as a lot of collectors will just take a flat breast and hairline coin and except it as "Its a New Orleans Mint Coin" ... Gem strikes can be found if you take the time to do so ... Nice Coin Matt

I agree that NGC gave it a bump up! This was more than likely due to the strong strike. When so many New Orleans minted Morgans are known for weak strikes and especially many of the 1884-O's, it refreshing to see one with such a strong strike!

Nice job of photographing it! I am sure the small defects are not as apparent with the coin at actual size. Nice Coin, deserves the grade.

That's a nice looking Morgan but that scratch above the date sure is distracting. IMO

Very nice Morgan. I'm getting ready to submit 5 Morgans myself to NGC. A couple are pretty nice, be interesting to see how they come back. Again a beautiful Morgan.

Although I don't necessarily agree that this coin got a bump, I certainly agree about the strike. It possibly the nicest I have ever seen on a New Orleans mint Morgan. In addition, this coin appears to have semi-prooflike fields with frosted devices which makes it immensely eye appealing IMO. If this coin has outstanding luster, I see no reason why it should not grade an MS66. A few minor marks should not reduce the grade of a coin with exemplary strike, luster, and eye appeal, especially if they are not in the main focal areas of the coin. To illustrate the quality of this coin, I really think we need to compare it to another 1884-O MS66 Morgan.

Strictly from a surface preservation standpoint, I guess the bottom coin is superior. But market grading is supposed to weigh all of the elements of the coin's grade in reaching the final grade. For those of you that don't believe the OP's coin to be an MS66, I pose this question. Which one of these two coins would you pay more money for?

I think your coin is an MS66 all day long Matt. Great find! BTW, I would love to know what grade you predicted it would get when you submitted it. Given the apparent prooflike qualities of the coin, I wouldn't mind it having a star as well.

Having seen a LOT of "o" mint morgans to pick out mine I can attest that we can compare them between 1882-85 New Orlean Mints as those years are pretty similar in striking quality or lack there of ... here are four from my collection a 64 / 65 / 66 / 66 - Can you pick which are the 66's :)

Sorry for the pictures - some are before what I knew what white balance was :)
