I am new to the forum, and hope I am not breaking any rules, but...I am looking for information pertaining to two medals sold at Sloan Auction Galleries in Maryland on June 16, 1993. The medals, sold as Lot #567, were, I believe, similar, depicting the profile of Andrew Carnegie on the obverse with the text, Benefactor of Humanity. The medals were stuck by Tiffany and Co. A gold version was presented to Carnegie at a ceremony at the Pan American Building in 1911. I am searching for a catalogue of this sale or any information pertaining to the provenance of these works. Any information would be greatly appreciated as I am developing an article around them.

I would try searcing Sloan Auction Galleries for previous sales if you haven't already. Maybe try Heritage or Stacks previous sales.

Thanks for the suggestion, although it was my first stop. The selling gallery was really of little help. To be honest, I was hoping that someone in the forum might recognize the medal in theirs or a friend's collection.

The Pan American Medal was presented to Carnegie by the American Republics. It was the first time in history that such a tribute from so many nations had been paid to an individual. The honor was bestowed upon him by the Pan-American conference in Buenos Aires. 160 million people from 21 sovereign nations.

If you could only find a copy of the 1911 ceremony program:

Here the 1911 news article from the NYT.

I found the Program. A copy of it is in the archives of Strathmore College. If you are close, you can examine it.

Yes, thank you, all correct! I have all of this information, including archival drawings of different working versions of the obverse. The original gold medal given to Carnegie is now located at a museum in his name in Scotland. Tiffany and Co. struck the medal twice more, in silver. I would like information-provenance-pertaining to these two other medals. I would like to know for whom they were originally intended and where they have been since 1911. When I discovered the auction listing for them I almost fell out of my chair because I knew of them, but was never able to sustantiate them with any concrete proof. Thanks for all of your help, I really do appreciate it all!!
