    Hey, I haven't been able to figure out what the dividing line is...At 46, I could fall into either camp. :}

    my personal philosophy.....

Age is a state of being, with it comes wisdom (for most). Old is a state of mind.

There were days in my 20's when I felt OLD, and was just as grouchy as you can get. When I hit 113, I plan to still be a kid at heart. (still a long long way off).

As my Gerontologist wife says, "The best age of all is the age that you are".

It is younger folks who tend to get most excited and interested by changes in our circulating coinage. That being said, I think the 50 States Quarter Program has generated more interest (and more new coins) than older generations ever saw as children.

Think about it for a moment...

You may encounter an older individual who as a child saw the introduction of the Kennedy Half, the Roosevelt Dime and the Lincoln Memorial Cent. How does this compare to seeing five new quarters every year? And, the excitement of the new nickels?

It doesnt compare,, the SQ's are anything but new and as far as having any historical significance ?? or any thing to do with what our coinage should Freedom, Liberty,??? add your own !! Low relief ,Junk !! is the best decription I have seen so far.sure the pictures are pretty, but If you think they will circulate for the next 96 years ? like the lincoln cent ,Im afraid that you will be extremely disappointed.

The 50 States Quarter Program is an overwhelmingly positive step for our circulating coinage. It has introduced countless new collectors to numismatics, has created collector and non-collector interest in our coinage, and has produced some of the most beautiful circulating coins produced by our mint in many, many years.

Yes, they may not have the significance or beauty of say a Walking Liberty Half Dollar, but do not underestimate them and their impact on our hobby and the future of our coinage.

And, think about the excitement for a new, young collector who, knowing only the Washington Quarter, could look forward to five new quarters a year for his/her Whitman album.

They could have been done better - higher quality designs, higher relief, etc. - but even as they are, they are the most exciting thing that has happened to United States Circulating coinage since the World War II era - in my opinion.

I conceed two points to you, one is that it has introduced many to the coin collecting hobby, with these questions,, what will their collections of state quarters be worth? will they have any lasting value ? will they teach other generations of children anything about our founding principles ?

The other is that they will have a lasting effect on our hobby, but it is too early to tell whether that effect will be positive or negative, the SQ program has already been cited as a contributing factor in the design of a presidential dollar series, where the law governing our coinage will with out a doubt be changed to allow depictions of living presidents , is this the beginning of the end of any real historical coinage for our country ?

cdcda, how could you possibly know that, "It is younger folks who tend to get most excited and interested by changes in our circulating coinage." You couldn't possibly know that for sure. You are simply taking your own anecdotal evidence, along with your personal biases, and extrapolating a conclusion.

well Moen it is the younger people like u said. but some like me only want certain presidents on there (no clinton, or nixon) and the problem is that some presidents would be on longer that others. They should do the colonies or something

Moen, I was merely trying to imply that is often the younger generations that react with excitement upon receiving a new coin in their change, when many adults may not even give the event a fleeting thought. As a dealer, I see the interest level of young collectors when it comes to the quarters and new nickels and it really is quite phenomenal. I did not mean to make an unfair generalization though.

When I was in elementary school I used to get 30 cents every day from my mom. 25 cents was for the school lunch and 5 cents was for juice and a cookie at recess. I usually used the 5 cents to buy candy on the way to school or going home since I walked to school. Candy or gum wasnt allowed in school during those days so you had to sneak especially if you tried to eat it in class which I did LOL!!! It was not uncommon to get a standing liberty quarter or a buffalo nickel and sometimes the war nickels. Getting peace dollars with dollar bills was common just as it was getting wheat or lincoln cents. What was not common for me anyway was 50 cent pieces. I didnt see those until high school and I guess maybe it was because in high school lunch was 50 cents. What was really wierd was I went to Okinawa in 1964 (I was 10). The currency there at the time was U.S. so when I went to the corner store to get a soda (5 cents) I used U.S. coins (spent a lot of mercury dimes there hehheh). Then I went to Osaka and Kumamoto Japan and it was yen vs U.S. coins. I was totally confused since I had this pocket full of funny money mixed in with the U.S. stuff. By the way, the yen at that time was 360 yen to the dollar. Nowdays I dont really look at my pocket change except when I seperate them just to make it easier to turn in etc but I can automatically spot if there is silver in the pile then I usually get a little excited. I get more excited if I find a foreign coin but thats kinda rare here even with all the tourist we have.

Sometimes when I think of all the nice "old" coins that I spent on gum, candy etc I feel like going in the corner to sulk and cuss myself out LOL!! Me and my friends used to buy Bazooka bubble gum just to see who could get and chew the most at one time. My friend had the record. He could chew 10 pieces at one time and still blow a bubble. LOL!! Of course we left the gum under the desk top before we went home hehheh. Sometimes we tried to get it to stick on the classroom ceiling by throwing it straight up without getting caught. Worked most of the time.

Wow, 25¢ for lunch and 5¢ for juice and a cookie?!? I guess this thread really does only apply to "you old people" (those are Spider's words, not mine ;)). JUST KIDDING!!!! :)

In all seriousness, I sometimes think I was born about 50 years too early. I can't even imagine what it would've been like to live in a world where Walking Liberty halves, Standing Liberty quarters, Mercury dimes, Buffalo nickels (and, yeah, some Jeffies, too), and Lincoln wheaties were everyday coinage. (Of course, I also realize that a half-dollar was a pretty decent amount of money in the 1920s and '30s, but still....) Just gorgeous, gorgeous coins!!

Now if we can only get some real colors into our paper currency, I'll feel a bit better. :)

Alrighty, sorry for the aside. Back to coins....

I think it is kind of weird getting 33 different quarters and 4 different nickels RIGHT now in my change! Can't say that has ever been possible prior to now and yes, I am one of those old people you must be referring to?
