Both of these ears are on the same year and mint mark coins. comparing the two, would the result on the right be the result of post mint damage, mechanical doubling or something else?
Keep in mind I think a particular Mint would have 3 machines running. So each machine uses about, say 1,000 dies during that year per machine. Plus each die will start deteriorating as it is used. The first batch is nice and crisp details, then it just gets worse from that point until the last batch has all sorts of problems before a new die is used. Thus you are comparing apples to apples from a super high level. But the odds are against you that you are actually comparing the same die. So expect some differences from cents from the same facility/year excluding any circulation issues. AND if you notice the right one has a flatten ear from the top to the bottom probably from PMD
Heavymetal, my intent was not in regard to a specific coin, but as an educational exercise. It is actually a 1997-P that would be a single squeeze. But that PMD is so precise that it did not harm any thing but that small part of the ear. I agree on PMD, but that hit did cause me to take a closer look and examine it closer.
