The TPGs and us are off many times by 1 full grade....sometimes 2 grades....and yet, we're worrying about tenths from 65.1 to 65.9 ? :D

Unless the grading scale is QUANTIFIED -- which it is NOT -- as in how many dings, scuffs, gouges, dings, etc....then subjectivity is the name of the game.

Agreed...but many times, experts get it wrong and novices get it right. Not as often as the reverse, for sure.:D

No the TPGs are not often off by a grade or two, the us part was right

My understanding is that the standards were strict 20-25 years ago (1990's)...got loose about 15-16 years ago (2004 as per Doug)...and havne't changed since.

I don't recally any consensus that they've gotten "tougher" in the aggregate or for any coin type (gold or silver) or series (i.e., Franklins, Barbers, etc.).

I refer you to that infamous Franklin Half Dollar thread over ATS where gradeinflation turned a $400 coin into a $12,000 coin (or something like that).

I admit they're better than lay people, novices and intermediates especially. Maybe you vets can better stand up to them.

But this whole "crack-out" game is proof that things are fluid.

No, grading standards aren’t fluid, the “crackout game” is proof that subjectivity is inherent in the grading process.

Crack some old coins out and send them back in, could be eye opening on how much you believe that

Funny how the countless downgrades and same grades never get mentioned

I'm not sure I BELIEVE it so much as I haven't seen any discussion to the contraray.

You think the TPGs have gotten tougher in the last decade ? Overall ? On silver or gold or both ? Any particular series ?

Could be a response to CAC, no ?

Many have just stopped wasting their time arguing with people that never submit or aren't even in the market for years anymore.

Submit some silver and gold and see how it turns out, many people would be surprised.

I find playing GTG and looking at raw coins on the auction sites and also grading coins without looking at the grade to be instructive.

Seeing the variation in prices for coins with the same grade is also fascinating.

I bet the ratio of upgrades to downgrades is far higher.

The problem with this whole re-submission thing is you can send in a coin 20 times and 19 times it was (correctly) graded like it was originally...then on the 20th time, you catch a more liberal grader on a good day and voila !!! You go up a full point or a key "+" or "*" and the coin now costs alot more.

Personally, I wish they kept detailed scans on all the coins once-submitted and then didn't allow them to be re-graded except under the most extenuating of circumstances. I know some coins deserve a 2nd grade/shot, but I hear from much more active collectors than me all the time that they are re-sending in batches of this or that series hoping for just 1 upgrade that will pay for the whole batch or their entire year's supply of submissions. :yack:

The OLD PCGS coins were severly/strictly graded... (green lable) when they 1st changed to the blue they started relaxing and doing what i call "straight" grading but then mid 90s early 00s they got plain sloppy if you ask me... a good example This puppy would get a 67-68 easy today... but not under a green label... (plastic is a lil scratched... coin is spotless) 20201113_003650_HDR.jpg 20201113_003657_HDR.jpg

Weasel, that's a Gen 3.1 holder.....1995-98. Supposedly, the standards then were still pretty strict. It's when the various shades of blue label holders took place in the 2000's that things supposedly got loosey-goosey. :D

Like I said before anyone that believes that try it out and see how that works out.

+ and * weren't grades before so getting one is just getting the grade it would have if they had those when submitted

Haven't submitted yet, but others tell me how they see it. Could be right or wrong, whatever.

    Good point !

Gonna look for that Franklin Half Dollar Thread over ATS....see if any new posts or similar threads created....we don't seem to have those over here.

I probably off by a few years but I know enough that a lot of green pcgs labels are under graded :D

    Here is the post:

And you won't see anything new because most are either deleted or people don't bother posting since they know it could lead to being banned.
