Hi all, These coins were going to be dipped by old time collector/dealer and I managed to save them from their fate Some might think I should have let them be dipped, but I liked them. Even the BTW which I always thought was an ugly coin looks better to me toned. Jim
Coin collectors thank you for preserving the past. However, now I know how to get the best price for my coins when I want to sell them. I will just post pics here and threaten to clean them
Yep, that booker is better looking toned. Takes it out of the Churchhill Crown race for being really ugly. : ) Nice pickups Jim Other Jim
Dip the Morgans save Booker T - I've never seen such group so opposed to doing what I'd dip those Morgans so fast it would make your head spin - the Booker I'd leave alone - you'all amaze me about cleaning coins sometimes and I, for one am not in denial. Coin can be cleaned with GREAT success especially silver. 99% of all bright white Morgans have been dipped or worked on to improve and enhance their appearance. This is common practice among 9 out of 10 collectors and dealers that I know of. I know dealers who dip and get Morgans graded by PCGS, NGC and others often in grades of MS-64 and higher. I have seen in person a man take off spots from a sliver eagle and you cannot spot it with a 20 power loup. I have dipped 100's of Silver proof Franklin's, Washington's and Kennedy's and made them fabulous compared to what they looked like before. To keep on proclaiming "don't clean or conserve" coins is just not telling the truth on here and at the least not fully telling the newcomer what he or she will someday learn about irregardless. Now the caveat's are many, you cannot clean BU copper successfully, (for the most part) - gold usually does not need to be cleaned. People new to the hobby should never clean coins until they have looked at at least 100,000 coins and purchased $2000 worht of books and read them several times. Most AU-58 and below never benefit from cleaning but certainly may benefit from conditioning. Coins can be ruined by cleaning also very easily - no one should attempt this until much later in their collecting career, say 5 years minimum! These are common practices that the new person to the hobby needs to hear and to be told the truth about but then greatly cautioned to "not attempt" until one gains considerably knowledge and always practice first on "non-expensive coins". I am just not going to subscribe to this "oh don't ever clean or attempt to restore" any coin because that just is not the truth. People on here young or old come to learn - when you'all say oh, "nobody in their right minds ever attempts to clean a coin" it not telling them the whole story. Ben, not afraid to have an opinion Peters.
Ben, you have only been around here for a short time. And because of that you have missed a great many previous discussions on this subject. You have not said anything that hasn't been talked about at least 100 times. The thing is this, there are many collectors who have found that originallity in a coin can be much more appealing than if the same coin were dipped. And quite often an original coin will bring higher prices as well. Of course it depends on each individual coin. I would agree with you that some coins would be better off if dipped. But by the same token many of them would not. And that depends of course on who is making the decision as well as the coin and how it looks. The idea of automatically dipping any coin with battleship grey toning is an old one Ben. It has changed greatly in recent years. Many of the more advanced collectors go to great lengths to search out original coins and would not buy a dipped coin on a bet. And any dealer worth his salt should be aware of this.
Ben, I don't think I said this. It doesn't matter to me if you or anyone dip their own coins, or even if they get slabbed. I just said I saved them from their fate~~ of becoming like all other million of similar white coins with no "interest factor" to me. I like them better this way for personal esthetical reasons. Some people like plain vanilla ice cream others like blueberry-raspberry-cheesecake. I have plenty of Morgans that are blast white....but I do wish they had some colorful personality to go along with their history. Jim
Well said Jim. I'm sure there are dipped and cleaned coins that get slabbed. Dipping was more readily accepted in the 70's and as a result many a coin were dipped. Light dipping may enhance a coin while heavy dipping will actually hurt it. I have blast white coins also, but give me a naturally toned beauty anytime. Though NGC will give its "star" designation to a "blast white" coin, almost all of the ones I've seen are beautifully toned coins. And many beautifully toned coins recieve premiums because of the toning. I'll take a heavy helping of the blueberry-raspberry-cheesecake please. Harry
I think its all a matter of personal preference. IMHO if someone who is in possesion of a coin that has beautiful or ugly toning and choose to dip it, I'm not gonna be a hater. And I don't think any of you should be either. For me, I'm into this hobby because I love the history and beauty of these coin's and the knowledge that comes with collecting them. I'm not in it at all for making dinero, so I don't care, as long as they are not affecting my collecting. But that's just me. mike Ps. Nice booker, I think the brown gives it good character.
I was fairly certain I gave all the mentioned exceptions already, You are right I've just been on here a short time but I have been in coins for quite awhile and completely stand by my already stated opinions. More importantly I have already (several times) given any and all points that you are referring to that are exceptions as they are many. We give nothing to the new collector/dealer if we do not give them the whole story about cleaning coins. If we say "don't clean coins" we are exposing only half or a smaller portion of the entire story.. A good analogy would be for young people - "don't use drugs" because they are bad! Then the first time they experiment with drugs they have the best time in their entire life. Then they think back at what we told them and immediately forever, incorrectly assume we have know idea what we are talking about. When we give them the truth - drugs are bad, plus they make people feel very good (at least for awhile), they are useful and needed, they have great potential for abuse but are also very useful in healing, etc., etc., - I hope you can see my point. Now you say this has been discussed at nauseum before, how am I to know that? Maybe the person in charge of this site could program related discussions to pop up when they are started or posted, I don't know that would be pretty cool though but I have no idea if can be done. Till then, until you'all kick me off for some unknown reason I will give my opinions as I ascertain them to be true and complete. After living this long and knowing that there are very few absolute truths (black or white answers) in the world I will give all sides of issues especially the ones people are reluctant to talk about - that's just me. Ben Peters
Ben you are more than welcome to voice your opinion any time you wish. I encourage it in fact. The only reason I posted what I did is because of what you said above - so that you would know that the whole story is told, quite often.
10-4 and thanks You know i really do love here and the person/people who do this are to be thanked again and again - Wouldn't it be nice if there was a program that pulled up past posts and related info. when you typed in a couple of key words? Not only would it spare us repetition it would be a learning platform for everyone. Now I may be barking at the moon here in suggesting such a thing and the very thing may even be already on here, (I'm not very computer literate) but maybe we can get this thought to the top man and just see. Also - I don't know if I can help Coin Talk but I would be very willing to volunteer to help with die variety info, Lincoln Cent Info or in any capacity that I could. I know a lot of people and have a lot of resources as well as several thousand doublED dies and RPM's. Thanks, Ben (not as bad as I sometimes come across) Peters
OK, I am guessing that you are looking for something more sophisticated than the search in the blue bar at the top of each page, but what else can you do?
Doing searches on this site, or any site for that matter, can be more complcated than it looks. What I have always found to work best for this site is to use the Advanced Search function, keep it to just 1 key word and use the User Name function as well. That really narrows it down for you. And if you don't find what you want then think of a different key word. Using Google to find something on this site is sometimes easier than our own search function because Google allows you to search within results. But always use the Advanced Search on Google and then search within results making sure to put your key words in quotes.
In the title It may be not realistic but each time you put something in the title bar I guess??? Kind of like a side bar would pop up and display related posts just to help with repetition. Kind of like a body would instantly see similar posts and then be able to decide on relevancy and whether or not their posts would be just be repeating items that have gone on already. But thanks I had already forgot about the blue bar capability. Just a boy from the hills don't you know? Ben sometimes narrowed focus Peters
We have to wrk within the capabilities of the forum software - it only does so much. As for related posts, just scroll down the bottom of any page and you'll find them there.
